Ever go to a sportsman club meeting it's not the young guys that are there but older members who put in countless hours take notes and volunteer to do many different functions. For all the young guys whining I rarely see them doing anything Constructive or helpful.

Can use boat only paddles, oars or electric motors. Case lake is hatchery dump and gets large breeders end of season. Shore access is good , outflow is best at harwood in my experiance. There are lots of small parcells of state land along with the large areas. Seen some nice deer taken off the state land around here every year, turkey and grouse as well if you put in the time.

I think it all comes down to this... Most hunters want to see deer, and have the chance to harvest the game period!! ar's , one buck limit, shorter seasons are all catering to the idea if there are more bucks around they will be seen and the hunters will have a chance at them. The reality is some people cannot "see deer" or do not put in time, or know how to hunt effectivly. As the saying goes 90%of game is taken by 10% of the hunters.... I know several hunters who got skunked this year, did they do any to change the way the hunted? no went to the same stand they had for last 10 years, while the deer crossed the woods 200 yards away following freshly fallen tops from a neighbors logging job over the summer.. hunting is what you make it, being adaptive is an important skill set to have. i am so tired of hearing the hunter ..i hav ehunted the same spot for 30 years there are no deer anymore.. (perhaps the woods has matured the brushy draw he hinted has become mature woods, the farmers field the deer use to go to eat in is now a house and lawn.. the list could go on and on....

a lot depends on the shape of the land a long skinny property surrounded by a long skinny property, much of it may be unusable if buildings are next to it,or across street from it 500' is a long way., plus you have everyone sitting on property lines.. i know it makes a lot of hunters upset to even see another hunter....a 500' wide property is pretty useless imo, will deer walk thru it, yes could you hunt it with any more than 1 or 2 people effectivly and enjoy it no.. same as habitat on it if 10 acres is open field.. or wide open woods it would be less enjoyable to me. can 20 acres be enough? nice square piece, with a creek thru it some pine, and hardwood mix in various states of regrowth absolutly! when you buy land you will suffer from if i only had that piece over the fence..my hunting could be better... i know ive been thru it buying out several other camps to have the property i have now.... imo 50 acres would be minimum to start with.. you stand a chance of holding game on your own property, can "get away from other hunters" are entitled to landowner tag..as well as invit ea friend or relative to hunt safely and enjoyably with you. it seems like a bunch of small camps neeed to all get along to truly enjoy hunting. but add in qdm ar's and it can fall apart fast. camps up the road are having a tough time as the 50 acre piece everyone use to have access to hunt was sold to a management minded person who closed hunting, 10 people that owned (3) 5 acre camps surrounding it now only have 15 acres to hunt on... and now i see for sale signs on two of them... this is fine just for deer hunting, finding a cooperative turkey on less than 50 acres can be hard to do consisitantly. Apart from just enjoying time in the woods, most hunters i know want to see game and have a chance to take it.(enter every deer management plan here,as well as turkey, bear, duck, goose and phesant)the question is do you want to see and harvest game consistantly, the larger the property the better your chances...

It's a good area, close to lot of other state land as well, harwood lake is connected to it, and case lake is close by as well as hanging bog /cranberry hollow.
-
These must be fakes as everyone I talked to had an awful season and saw no deer......
-
Depends if you want to sit and wait for a deer and if your neighbors all post on your line... 20 acres is not enough for turkey hunting

American Chestnuts and Hazelnuts
G-Man replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Hazelnuts or filberts get hit hard by squirrels and deer, have yet to find a way to protect them , maybe grows knows . -
Always try n take the doe with twin button bucks, with no momma to kick them out they stick to her home range and you see them as 1.5 year olds, with their first horns.

American Chestnuts and Hazelnuts
G-Man replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
The American chestnut are amazing trees, my largest now has blight bad and is dying, but made it to 12 in in diameter, the game literally waits under it for seeds to fall... -

Entries vary each year... I have seen years with 150 and yearswith 400... on average maybe 200 + entries... a very small percentage of overall bucks taken, but there are many bucks that are never scored and bucks that just miss the book that would be considered big bucks by most. Still, you're probably looking at less than one half of one percent of all bucks taken would be considered big bucks. I wonder how that compares to other big buck states. I know it seems like every deer they shoot on tv is a big one (most I've seen on dvd descriptions a re 130's to 150's GROSS score. ) yes the media picks the biggest bucks and runs stories on them, I wonder what percent of other states are "big. Bucks"

Computers are used in buying licenses, so the DEC computers already know who's got licenses and permits. We already do our reporting via computerized phone input or P.C. inputting. So the DEC computers are already fed the input by hunters. If the reporting rules were changed to require that every license or permit issued had to be reported (successful or not) a simple computer count would tally up the numbers, and a simple computer sort would identify exactly how many hunters did not report and exactly who it was that broke the reporting laws. That's ok but I know people that report doe take every year but don't shot them as they don't want the herd decimated by mo re doe tags the next year. Was even worse with the paper mail in tags, mailed in as successful harvest and never used. That has to screw up.even the current estimates

I just think it's sad when hunters can make influence by not seeing anything... maybe they aren't good hunters.. I think the biggest obstical that needs to be done first is more personnel, (biologists and enforcement ) are needed before any new plan is adopted. Otherwise we are just putting the cart before the horse. maybe joe would know how many big buck entries are added every year? I know some aren't entered but it sure seems a lot of big buck are taken every year statewide.

I go with a quality drop away, have a good ship look it over if string or cables need to be replaced, and a good cleaning. I'd draw length a mathews dealer will need to swap out cam

Skied off the barn roof, and dug some awesome snow caves in drifts. Had some trapped motorists stay at the house on the couch till dad got home and fave them a ride home by snowmobile

my area has a quite sustainable deer population and has for over 20 years. To manage properly wmu must be smaller, this would require more personnel biologists, enforcement, ect. Trying to change the entire state to be the same is just impossible under a new state program The way it is. Every area (region of the state is different) a one buck rule only leaves more deer which is fine if habitat can support them. Most cannot. Doe tags and access to areas that need reduction is more critical, perhaps a tax break if land owners allow hunting. Every thing that is proposed is just feel good legislation. Has nothing to do with controlling p op ulation. If you want to hunt for big buck research areas they are taken nys bbc is good place to start. Some areas will never hold deer numbers hunters want or the quality.
-
I don't understand why every one keeps saying we're behind the 8 ball in management in nys. We have deer and a lot of them, big bucks? Having a bunch doesn't make it any easier to kill one. So the only problem I see Is unrealistic hopes of media influenced hunters IN terms of big bucks taken. I mean they watch the, shows buy all the crap they advertise they use, even buy and plant that food plot stuff they do, guess the fault lies with state management of deer cause them big ones should be falling at my feet. That's the problem imo
-
An earn a buck in high doe populated areas would work but, the dec doesn't have the ability to change back after the population is back in check, wmu areas are to big to be effectively managed, let alone the whole state under a single plan.
-
To try and make the entire state a trophy state is really unthinkable to me even the big buck states have better areas or regions to hunt in.. soil type, habitat lend a lot to the total growth an animal can achieve.
-
Still interesting, as for the actual Cornell survey, I truly hope it is done by region or wmu. for an ar's are favored around rochester , but shorter season favored in southern wny, 1 buck in a Catskill area, I see the results very regionalised, areas with high population and success may favor no change.. though for a little online poll it was surprising the number % of no change
-
nyoutdoor news did a poll dec 26th, on how the dec should change deer hunting, thought results were interesting. 27% were for antler restrictions 28% were for no change 20% for 1 buck season 15% for education 9% for shorter season. now the real question for me is what areas (should of been done by region or by wmu's) responded and how...... what the catskills need is not what is needed in wny , or wny needs are not the same as the dacks....
-
Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.
G-Man replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
Any other species but cervid(hoofed deer, including elk, moose ect) we hunt is closed during their mating season, turkey (majority of breeding is done in April), fox breed in march, coyote in april, you want more and bigger bucks close the season during the rut.
