How many days do you hunt during deer season? How far do you travel to hunt?
G-Man replied to Dave's topic in General Hunting
Over 60 days from walking out the door to 1 to 3 miledrive to back of property and another. Had good season filled all my tags but bear.and passed a small one at that. -
Happens a lot everytime I hear my 1,neighbor shoot,I cringe because unless it drops he doest look. One year I found 2 8pt, a 4pt, and a doe. All gut shot and never tracked. To much bang flop on tv,with no blood trailing,or even tracking shown as its to tramatic for the viewers. It even seems that not following is worse with rifle,as shots are further and even if someone looks they may not be looking in spot deer was standing,as it looks different on ground than from a tree. Glad I was taught to follow every shot up when I was a kid, blood or not follow it as far as possible to.make sure.

Good for you and him hate to see an animal suffer!

article is skewed by hunter density per sq mile, and mature deer harvested, nothing in there about huntersatisfaction, public private land access . And they don't like snow and cold weather for hunting, I don't know too many hunters in ny that don't wish for cold and snow. That article is like statistics can be manipulated to give anything you want to show. Don't want a little buck don't shoot one.no excuses of someone else will. You control what you shoot unless you hunt in a AR area....

I am sick of being compared to other states, most have significantly few hunters and deer populations, less public land, and way less hunters per square mile. There are big deer taken every year in ny. A lot are never put in books. The biggest problem I see in NY is law enforcement, people filling wives/father/grandfathers tags. Beyond that 2 bucks isn't a problem, how many legally shoot 2 buck a year? Aa small percentage for sure. You can't stockpile big bucks on a property they don't put up with each other...

Again if your flash hole is open and your getting a hang fire ,your primer is probably too hot. It will push the pellets down the barrel before they ignite. All 209 primers are not the same! This is the most common hang fire when using pellets, and another reason why most serious black power shooters do not use pellets.
-
If your flash hole is clear, you my be using too hot a primer and blowing pellets and bullet down the barrel be for it ignites. Try a cooler burning primer. You should not have to ever drill out the hole larger, and it reduces the performance off your gun.

I keep a pair in my car all winter, work good to go thru swamps as well as snow

Depends on what you want done, some do fish extremely well,or specialize in deer,or African game,or bear. No taxidermist is the best at anything. I use one for deer one for bear, another for turkey, one for small game. Price isn't everything, some do great work reasonable, some charge a fortune and do mediocre work. A more specific question should be asked.like I need a good deer taxidermist. .

It will be 2 more years before you see full inclusion and a coursense for crossbow. As for far shots 70 yards with a compound on a 5 pt. Practiced and well within cabability. Everyone has their own ability and every situation presents a different ethical shot distance.

Small hidden winter plot opinions
G-Man replied to DeerSlayers's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Anything is better than. Nothing. But with a small plot it does not matter what you plant is going to be stripped before late season. Girdeling trees is also an alternativery to let light in to get a larger plot, and they will dry and season while standing and can be cut years later for firewood that is dry. Raking around trees ,removing g leaves and just scratching soil can give you a much larg er plot of winterrorism rye. -
Hey I give the guy credit if I had an extra Der I'd give it to him befo e a food bank.

Ohio archery season (including crossbow) takes close to the same numbers as gun an almost 50-50 split of total take.. but have 1/2 the total numbers of deer hunter as nys. It just seems that some quality bucks are coming out of non AR areas...so is a state wide mandate nessary? Check out posts from different sites. And I agree with Joe some hunters will never take a big buck.and others will consistiantly get one.
-
I have shot 2 buck late season that lost a horn, first poppedal off while it was on a death run. The second popped off when it was used as a drag handle. ...

As I peruse joe's nyantlersoutdoors page ,I see a lot of nice bucks killed in counties without antler restrictions. Granted they may not be "book" bucks but it seems that most or all of us would be happy with them,as the hunters smiles show they are. I don't see a reason to expand ar's as it zseems there are good bucks out there without them.

The platinum shoot well out of my encore, no complaints 5 deer shot with them in last 3 years. Not a fan of regular powerbelts

Push those stumps down wind to help funnel deer movement into your plot for hunting.

I still prefer the drop in the mail system, 1 deer report was fine,2nd pain in the $$ got trasf er ed to office.
-
Approximately 650000 big game hunters, everyone gets a buck tag ,but not everyone gets a buck.nor will they ever. 2 buck tag system (if you bow or muzzloader hunt) any one know how many take 2 buck legally? .as for 2 being taken in gun illegal is illegal.

It was a different season this year, some at camp were extremely happy some others weren't. It was a 3 part problem by m ed 1st.100 plus acres of standing corn doesn't help,it leaves a huge area for deer to hide in. 2nd, hunter pressu e has decreased as media shows stand hunting as the way to hunt, most hunters are afraid of pushing a deer to someone else. 3rd, nut production was up as well as regrowth from logging creating new travel patterns. The last factor is in buying my ultimate hunting property I have eliminated 4 other camps and removed 8-16 hunters from the surrounding former camps reducing forced movement by them just walking to stands in the woods.
-
90% of hunting opening day kills are result of unorganized deer drives.just everyone walking into the wood is the same let alone shooting and scaring them,so ethically when do you hunt then?
-
If I were a doe and I didn't want to be harrassed by a horn buck I wouldn't hang aron there grow....
-
I have cut down trees with stands in them, after I had removed the stand and placed on trail to stand site next to my posted sign(my name and number on it),only to return a week later and find the stand back in the same tree. Thus the stand and the tree were removed. To set a trap,or sabotage a tree or stand is just wrong and criminal.

We hang from neck as blood in body cavity drains out better.from gutting and easier b yo wash out if need be. A big buck that will be mounted is hung from rear legs as not to stretch the neck before it is caped(usually done asap)
