  1. Last year was a good year because the tree's didn't get frosted like the two yrs prior. It can be tuff here where as the tree's start to flower & then the frost croaks a lot of the potential fruit. Schoharie county for what ever reason seems to have a little different growth pattern. It generaly better there. The apple tree's are fun to mess with & benefit a lot of wildlife.
  2. Honestly for me it's not about how many I "catch" it's spending time in the woods with my dog & watching him learn & work. The first couple birds you take pictures of. Probably because your so proud of the pup. Though we still get out most days no more gun for this season. We just go through the motions .
  3. Another good reason to put X-bows back on the shelf. No where to practice shooting them.
  4. If your talking upstate I think your safe pruning up until the end of feb .& early march. Just don't prune to much as you could shock the tree. Anything that grows straight up gets cut.
  5. I cleaned out around a bunch of them on my property & pruned them this time of year & they have been producing. I also fertilzed them & was going to spray them but never did. Last year was great producer. Deer love the apples also . My lawn is covered with apples in the fall & just before gun season you can't find an apple. It's like a vacum cleaner came through !
  6. Years ago the rough cut lumber was cheaper. I think not so anymore . Reason is it costs a lot to mill. These guy's are competing against new technology & massive sized companys. It's hard on the smaller saw mills to compete. In this economy I would look at an area lumber yard for a reccomendation for a good contractor to build it for you. Start with a shell perhaps & go from there. estimates are generaly free. Good Luck !
  7. We get out most everyday . For me archery deer hunting used to be my passion now it's become grouse hunting with my GSP. It says Brooklyn as your location. I would head to the catskill's . Check computer for WMA's & go from there or knock on doors & ask permission. Small game hunting is pretty easy to get permission.especially grouse.( people think were nut's for hunting them .
  8. Tell that to my GSP ! Not to sound like I am picking on you . It is a fair question you ask. When you work a dog on grouse like any other trick we may try & teach them they learn what works & a good grouse dog is fun to work with.
  9. Been seeing them here in Franklin( delaware cty) the past couple yrs & have pic's on trail cam's.
  10. Red , I was a siding contractor in NJ for 25 yrs for myself. Been doing siding since 1976. If you want I would be able to figure you a fair market price. PM me with dimensions of your home & I will shoot a price back to you. I now am semi-retired in the Oneonta area doing all phases of home improvement. I work alone after many yrs of having employee's & a solid siding contracting co.
  11. How about Partridge Run WMA ?
  12. or he wants to add another to his personal collection.
  13. What town in otsego did you end up in? I live right on the fringe of Otsego. I may be able to point you in the right direction should you need any info. & congrats on the property purchase ! & actually lately some big bucks have been coming out of otsego county.
  14. I wonder if the NRA would be able to help you out with this ? Just a thought.
  15. Where I hunt on private land the hunting stinks. The citi-diots bring up a ton of guy's & hunt all over everyones property. The farmer down the road brings in out of the area hunters. So my point is the grass is always greener on the other side. My feeling's are when it is the deer season all the woods are packed. Though I own my own land I may be trying state land next year !

  17. I am not a "meat" hunter or a "rack" hunter but rather a deer hunter. Right now (IMO) the NY deer heard is screwed up. There doesn't seem to be any balance. Question is how do we fix it . ( if it needs fixing) or better yet make it so it works for everyone ? After being pro-A/R for many years I don't think this is the answer. I would lean more toward one buck rule for sure.
  18. You want to see the deer heard jump up right quick. I am sure the insurance company's wouldn't like it. one month bow season ( because I'm a bow hunter) one week of regular gun ( bucks only this week) doe days to follow one week muzzle loader No antler restrictions (individual pref) One buck rule state wide ( how many deer do you need) try a different approach at teaching hunter education
  19. Holy Cow ! we can't seem to get away from this "fracking" subject !
  20. This is sounding not right to me ??? I thought they weren't allowed until next years season. I also thought you could only use them in areas that allow guns ? Not archery areas ?? Something up here ?
