  1. Here is the "poster child" for the argumant against ARs. 4 1/2 yrs old, 219# dressed weight 4 point! "Bullet proof" deer under ARs & I never saw another mature buck in the area until I killed him. I won't shoot a young buck anymore, but I have a young man in his mid 20s hunting my place for deer on his 1st season next year. It would suck if he couldn't shoot the 1st buck he saw if he had an ethical shot.
  2. I sight in my rifles @ 100yds so that I have maximum point blank range + or - 3". I use actual chronograph measured Mv & ballistic coefecients for the bullets I am using to plot the trajectory. Usually 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" high @ 100yds, depending on caliber. I can take shots to 275-310yds, again, depending on caliber, W/a dead on (vertical) center of the chest hold & routinely take whitetails @ 190-260yds. Nothing irresponsible about that, but it's a far cry from what the OP did. ^^^^What he said^^^^
  3. Does Lapua brass have drilled primer flash holes like Norma or are they punched like U S brass? Are the case heads a full .473"? I like '06 Norma brass for my 8mm-06 A.I. because of the drilled flash hole & case spec's that wern't undesize like U S cases. Lapua is considerably less expensive than Norma.
  4. I started my reloading adventeures W/an 8mm-06 Ackley Improved. W/180gr .323 NBTs @ 3000fps, it would blow chunks of Whitetail lungs the size of walnuts onto the ground. Unfortunately the guy that did the barrel turned it too thin & it walked POI. I'm going to get another barrel chambered for it W/a beefier profile. W/the new modern high energy powders I should be able to get about 2900fps W/200gr pills.
  5. I use powdered mica on the case necks for lube. It shows exactly where the die stops. I want the die to just kiss the shoulder when loading for a specific bolt action rifle. The cases fired in my 7mm-08 M700 Mnt Rfl DBM as well as loaded cases resized for the same chamber needed the dies set considerably shorter for the Savage AXIS-II I recently worked with. Ammo loaded for the M700 would chamber only with considearble bolt closing resistance in the Savage. After re-setting the dies there was just slight resistance at the very last bit of bolt closure, just enough to feel positive headspacing. It took some trial & error to achieve that precise fit. Cartridges loaded for semi-auto, pump or lever actions should usually have the dies screwwed down all the way for full length resizing. Also be aware that insuffecient case lube will cause the rim to pull slightly as the die is withdrawn giving a false (tight) headspace "feel". If you suspect such a situation, color the case head W/some sort of dark marker & pass it lightly over some fine emory or sandpaper laid on a hard flat surface (or a fine mill file) to see if there is a high spot. If you find that situation, set those cases aside & re-visit your case lube procedure & die setting. DO NOT attempt to flatten the rims W/stock removal! If the rims aren't severely deformed, you could probably salvage those "tight" feeling cases by loading them with moderate pressure plinking loads which will flatten the rims back to spec'.
  6. If you think Andrew Quomo is a liberal you're wearing blinders. He's an anti-union, anti public education, gun-grabbing conservative masquerading as a Democrat. You must think the "conservative" politicians are still concerned about your 2nd amendment rights after they got your vote. This past election was a farce. The 1% backed Quomo & ran a sacrificial lamb against him. If you paid attention, it appears that the negative TV ads against Astorino were from the same source as the ones against Aaron Wolfe.
  7. I grew to my full height @ 15. Your son will most likely soon outgrow a youth model & they also have 20" barrels compared to 22" for the full size model. More recoil, more muzzle blast. It's a rifle, not a shotgun. He will be able to adapt to a (temporarily) slightly long stock with the deliberate shooting style of a rifle. In another year the youth model might be too short.
  8. He won't get the nomination next time around. An underfunded newcomer took 35% of the primary vote this time.
  9. 7mm-08 will handle anything from groundhogs to elk W/the bias towards the larger game. If one reloads, bullets from 110gr to 175gr are available. .243 is maxed out @ 105gr.
  10. I liked the Sears ads W/Ted Williams. When I 1st started hunting hear the S. side of the Chicago suburbs in the '60s I bought a lot of my hunting stuff & shotgun shells from Sears. My 1st shotgun was a J. C. Higgins 16ga pump made by High-Standard. Lots of gun ads for brands no longer prevailent. The H&R M300 Bolt gun ad brought back memories & some very high quality European names were also represented. Again I was amazed @ the concern for the enviroment. Almost all of the articles about political/social issues were stressing the need for conservation. I remember how you could see the reddish cast in the air over Lake Calumet & the smog rolling up the Alegheny River in the summer. Pennsylvania did a great job cleaning up coal mine polluted streams in that era, turning many into pretty nice put & take trout fisheries.
  11. Not much more than a .243. They are both based on the .308 case. To start him out you could use 120gr reduced recoil loads. Then as he grows step up to standard 140gr loads or eventually go full bore with "Super Performance" loads. You would be covering a performance envelope from mild 257 Roberts recoil/energy to 270 Win/280 Rem power/trajectory. Perfectly capable of taking Elk size game with effeciency. 7mm-08 is a much more flexible cartridge than a .243. I always recommend it as a great beginer's caliber that will never be outgrown.
  12. I started reading the "cheers & jeers" section & found it puzzling how "sportsmen" of that erra were so concerned about enviornmental issues while today we seem to be at odds with conservationists.
  13. Those small one would be tender when they were fried.
  14. That's the reasoning behind some midwestern states allowing the straight wall rifle cartridges. Or rather smaller numbers of deer in the past were part of the reasoning behind shotgun/muzzleloader only. Pennsylvania had shotgun W/rifled slugs only & buckshot only counties when I lived there. That was solely due to poulation density. Allegheny Co (Pittsburgh area) was rifled slug only & it was becoming quite the trophy deer area in the earlly '70s. The counties around Philli were buckshot only.
  15. Good point. What is the firearms deer kill within the cities of Watertown & Corning anyway?
  16. Could it be that population densities might have something to do W/it? Besides, these things are decided by the people that live there & I would think the residents would have more say than someone that wants to hunt in the vicinity that may or may not even live in the area..
  17. Yes that is probably true, but they are more likely to tumble & aren't liable to go nearly as far as a rifle bullet. Lethality range for medium bore high powered CF rifles are measured in miles. Shotguns, in hundreds of yards. Even a 22rf will travel farther than a shotgun slug. Granted, some of the modern sabot rounds will extend the lethal range. The mandated pressure limits on shotguns rounds will still limit lethality to far less than say a 30-06. After all, like it or not, laws are usually geared towards the lowest common denominator.
  18. We're not talking a full swing W/a 16# sledge here, just a tap to see if the reticle is dislodged. Getting back to stories about "pushfeed" jams. Back in '99 I was driving home from work about 1/2 hour before sundown early in out NZ deer season. As I rounded a gentle curve a few hundred yds from my house, I looked across a mown hay field & spied a HUGE deer about 200yds distant walking past a staghorn sumac thicket. I couldn't see horns against the sumac bushes, but it was so larger, there was no doubt that it was a buck. I pulled into my driveway, rushed into my house, grabbed my .243 M700 ADL W/some cartridges & headed across the road. I trotted up the hill across my hayfield & crossed a fencerow into the adjoining property. I slipped up to the area where I had spotted the deer only to here the deep, slow thump-thump, thump-thump of a heavy deer escaping in the thick 2nd growth timber behind the sumac bushes. I reversed my direction & started to walk back towards the fence row. Somewhere along the way I had emptied the magazine. As I stepped into my hay field I looked to my right & saw a pair of yearling bucks about 20-25 yds distant W/their horns locked. They were pushing each other around just outside the edge of the woods. Since this was only my 2nd deer season hunting on my property, any buck was fair game. W/my eyes glued to the oblivious bucks, I fumbled in my pocket, retrieved several cartridges & started to stuff them into the magazine. I attempted to chamber a round while still keeping my eyes glued on the combatants. JAM! I now looked down into my weapon's magazine to see a cartridge that some how had become lodged crosswise in the magazine well. I frantically fished my rather full keyring out of my pocket & W/the numerous keys jingling rather loudly, I tried to pry the offending cartridge free. By now I had gotten the attention of the adolecent bucks & they were staring @ me, one of them W/his head cocked like a curious dog trying to figure out what all the commotion was about. They soon had their fill of the spectacle & jumped into the nearby cover. In a rather gloomy mindset, I walked the short distance to the house. I sat down in my Lazy Boy & tried to clear the jam. I ended up removing the stock in order to get the jam cleared. Don't ask me how I got it in such a bind, I haven't the foggiest idea. I traded that gun for a M700 Mtn Rfl DBM in 7mm-08 a few days later. Never again will I own a bolt action rifle W/a blind magazine! Even the crudest military Mausers have a floorplate that can be removed W/the use of a cartridge bullet point to depress a button. I have another strory about fumbling W/the M700 DBM (no fault of the rifle) that I will share later. I'm such a klutz @ times that I need the M98 features to eliminate as many stumbling (fumbling) blocks as possible.
  19. Ever hear of ricochets? Maximum lethal range W/a 22rf is 1 mile or more yet maximum trajectory is about 100yds.
