  1. We searched about a 50x50 yard area around a small crick just looking for blood but it's so thick in there that we figured we should back out with it getting dark and let him lay, if he is laying of course.
  2. I made a post back during the summer about two bucks I was keeping tabs on called George and Ralphy. Both bucks bedded on the same over grown pond and fed in the same two clover farm fields throughout the summer. They were very nocturnal and I lost track of them on camera for over a month during the middle of September. Well I caught both of them out feeding Wednesday and Thursday evening during daylight and I made a plan to hunt them this evening if the wind was right. The wind I needed was blowing out of the south and I snuck in perfectly at 3:30 this afternoon overlooking the clover I had found them back in. Well at about 5:45 Ralphy read the script perfectly and stepped out at about 100 yards. He's an awesome buck, by far the biggest deer I may shoot in my lifetime. Well between a swirling wind as the sun was setting, a narrow shooting lane, and a pounding heart, I pulled the trigger on the T/C. The smoke cleared and I watched him run back into the thick stuff tail up and not bleeding. Me and my father found no blood, and although the shot felt good, my gut feeling was screaming with doubt. I need some opinions from you veterans. Who out there has shot a deer and had them run off with tail up, no blood, and found your deer? I'm headed back in the morning, lost light quickly and it began to rain.
  3. Potatoe chips is spot on! My neck of the woods is down right frustrating right now it's so dry. Even slow concentrated steps are pointless.
  4. Hopefully the trip turns out as good as it sounds Bubba.
  5. Is everyone all set?? I bet a lot of you will be headed to the north country for a little much needed "deer camp," a.k.a beer camp. Have fun!! Smoke poles are a blast!! I have one farm I have been restricted from due to the land owners distaste for archery so I'm pumped to chase the two slobs living on it!! Post pics ya'll!
  6. I love little things like this that make camp, CAMP!!
  7. Jealous!!! Congrats brother, good shootin'!
  8. By the way, where is NY getting its age structure info from? The don't know how old the bucks we shoot are, just by our harvest info.
  9. Come on Culver, you know "educating surrounding landowners" is like pissing into the wind. They tell you to take your opinion and shove it just like most guys on here do. I should know from experience, I'm not sure I have ever spoke with someone who cares to be enlightened, and I have made my best effort on multiple occasions.
  10. I'm mid-state on the eastern border. Right where Washington county, Warren County, and Saratoga County Collide. Yes we get doe tags here. My apologies, I should have made clear that the OP was not word for word what I had read.
  11. http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/1314guidefull.pdf
  12. I know there's a recent thread about AR's, but did anyone see DEC's proposed options for the future? These are single options, not to all be imposed at the same time. They are: -Mandatory AR for the entire duration of fall hunting season. -Mandatory AR bow seasons through 1st week of rifle. -1 buck per year bag-limit. -Shorten rifle by 1-week in Southern zone and 2-weeks in Northern zone. -Actively promote voluntary AR's. -No action. I personally am in favor of the AR during bow season and first week of rifle, or the 1 buck bag-limit. If you have a problem with the 1 buck bag-limit you are just greedy in my opinion. Shoot a doe. What do ya'll think??
  13. Anyone out their catch Drury's wildlife obsession episode this week? Good lord! For one, "Goliath" was a truly fitting name for that deer, my good lord!! Secondly, I don't give a hoot and a half what Terry Drury's excuse was, you need to pull the trigger when a 234" non-typical is standing broadside at 30 yards!! Perfect shot?? Settle the pin and follow through old man winter!!
  14. IMO scouting, using prior season(s) knowledge, and running SD card style cameras is much more satisfying in our pursuit of a good looking NY buck. Don't let technology ruin your ability to be a woodsman. I get the whole less contamination deal and having the ability to leave an area unpressured, as well as the "live eye" for trespassers, so to speak. However, I personally can't shake the idea that it's a bit of cheating to have picture confirmation within two mins of said picture being taken. A spot you may not have hunted because you were "marinating" the camera and wanted to give it time before checking it to hunt that spot the next day, had a buck walk by your stand at daylight and then again in the evening 3 days prior, which would have been a missed opportunity. With these wireless cams you would have gotten a text on your phone while you were taking a nap at home and been able to rush out to your stand that evening without really having done anything but look at your phone and then draw your bow. Hey jack , as uncle Si would say, I like all the fun new gadgets too, but some are just to over the top for hunting. Regardless of your decision, have fun with it.
  15. My bad! Phone won't let me view trail cam vids, I'll have to check it out later!
  16. And yes I know that bear are omnivores, but to me they still hunt like predators when they need too.
  17. I just can't bring myself to eat a carnivore. I prefer herbivores!
  18. Dang wooly, that buck in the first pic sure would look nice on your wall!
  19. The first two weeks of early goose can be decent hunting, but the past couple years the third week has been the best. Fellow member Tyman1876 and I shot 13 this morning. Had a blast!
