  1. Diggin' my new Matt Van Cise touch series diaphragm from MAD calls.
  2. Unless he relax's by himself, I'm not risking boogering up the hunt over a picture perfect shot. Unlike deer, turkeys don't stick around when something's up, they're gone just as quick as they came in.
  3. I say ditch the blind and the ipad! keep it old school man and get down to the basics of turkey hunting, and what it's really all about. Sitting against the tree with little man in between your legs,or by your side, and enjoying the woods as they wake up. IMO we can all agree that hunting is about much more than the kill, its about the entire experience everytime you go afield. The downtime and sometimes boring aspects of hunting are what make the good hunts so special!! I 100% understand the ipad to keep his mind occupied but it's not necessary. When he starts getting bored it just means its time to get up and walk around and for a kid thats when the real fun begins! Show him the roosting sites, the dusting spots, some deer tracks. Tell him stories of the bird you missed or killed in this very field and how the whole hunt went down, or the time a coyote scared the heck out of ya when you were siting against this tree right here. Thats what makes for a love of hunting and time spent with dad. I still crack a big ol' smile thinking back to when I was only 6 or 7 and dad would let me tag along. He'd sip his coffee while holding a wine cork over the stove flame and then we blacken our faces with the charcoaled tip. I'm 22 now and have a handful of longbeards under my belt, all due to the experiences and things I learned while hunting with my father. No ipad, no blind, no fold up camping chairs. I hope you two have a blast regardless of what you do and be sure to post pictures!
  4. It's not the tape residue you guys need to worry about, there's countless products out there that will remove whatever residue you have left over, if any at all. It's moisture damage that cannot be fixed, rust is rust, aint no two ways about. I would be very careful with my gun if it was me. If you suspect any amount of mositure in the tape at all I would remove immediately, dry gun, and apply light coating of oil. Don't ruin a straight shooting rifle for the "cool factor", because in all reality your black rifle isnt gonna stand out so much that you'll never see a deer.
  5. You need to learn how to use your diaphragm, as well as applying back pressure with your hands when blowing a short reed. Check out YouTube videos by Shawn Stahl.
  6. I don't see why not. It will make the entire hunt and memory that much more special to him!!
  7. I have really taken' a liking to hunting 'yotes once deer season is over. Love hunting them at night, what a rush! Going to try some decoy tactics this year.
  8. By the way, 60 arrows before heading out to hunt is wayyyy to much. Shoot 5-6 arrows, treating every shot like it's "the shot", then head out to the woods.
  9. I can't tell you a damn thing that I have learned on the deer that I've killed, but I could talk to you for days about the things I've learned from deer I have missed. I'm glad you took up the sport and got to feel that adrenalin rush us hunters are always talking about. Post pics when you can!!
  10. I have to miss as well. I'm also taking a Civil Service exam in the morning. I better get the fricken job if I'm missing out on opening day!!!
  11. I don't understand why someone would dislike a broadhead that is mangled after shooting a deer. IMO every mechanical broadhead is a one use type of deal. The blades are freestanding so they have little support to keep them from bending or breaking, not to mention bone vs. blade at high speeds is quite the collision; derformation of the broadhead should be expected. I have shot two deer with a RAGE 2 blade and both times the broadheads were pretty beat up upon recovery, but this was AFTER they left gaping holes and did their job's.
  12. I guess his age was what I was referring to because I agree, there's is some good looking bone in the area if you look hard enough.
  13. Sorry guys, disregard this post. Haven't been on the forum in a few days so I missed it.
  14. Hey guys and girls, just wanted to share these pics. A buck in the county next to me was poached on property that practices QDMA, and it's got a lot of people around here upset, AS IT SHOULD! There's some good hunting around me but bucks like this guy are few and far between, and to have him live to be 5.5 is nothing short of an act of god. I know the Upper Hudson River Valley QDMA guys really try hard to work with what they've got so I feel terrible for them. This poacher may not realize it now but karma finds us all and his day will come. If anyone happens to know anything about this please say something to authorities!!!
  15. I loveeeee over-grown crick bottoms like that!!! They never lack deer activity.
  16. What a crock man. I'll stick to hunting on my home turf. If I ever go West it will be a DIY on public land. Cheaper and more satisfying, hunting can be just as good too.
  17. And that my fellow woodsmen and woodswomen is why you shoot a RAGE! Enjoy that awesome buck Geno, another memory has been made!!
  18. Love the questions, I think they're very practical and appropriate. I do agree however that we should all have a say. I noticed in the beginning of this thread that someone mentioned that he does not feel the survey seeks to improve the overall deer heard but just the antler size of our bucks. I personally feel that we have showed our inability as a state to manage for better bucks when based on personal discretion to let younger bucks walk, comparably, we have also shown our ability as a state to shoot a lot of deer, so keeping the "heard" in check shouldn't be a problem. I feel as though it is OUR job to manage heard size and the job of the STATE to protect yearling bucks. Just my 2 cents. Certainly not an attack post on whoever said that, just making a contribution to this topic.
  19. Sorry man but your dad sounds like the exact type of guy that we would be tearing to shreds on here. Not to mention it's super selfish to hunt your stand because he seen a good buck their, what kind of father does that?? He puts deer and himself before you. If I were you I'd ream his ass out real good, I love my father but I'm not afraid to tell him exactly what the deal is when something bothers me. Did I mention your dads a poacher? Best of luck man, sorry to seem harsh but that is not cool at all.
