New hunter to NY here. Found some public land to hunt, it’s a WMA. I wish I read the regs more thoroughly because I threw up a ladder stand yesterday and today when I was re-reading them, I saw you can’t put temporary stands on WMAs, only on state forests and other such state land. I honestly didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to, I even put my name and license # on the stand. I was going to go take it down tomorrow but it’s an hour drive so I wanted to ask, what do DEC officers do if they find a ladderstand like mine on a WMA? Is this an automatic fine or whatever? Will they just call me and tell me to come get it? Confiscate? How often do officers go through areas like WMAs and check for stands? Any info would be helpful. I’ll still probably go take it down tomorrow, although I have seen other stands up on the WMA, I just prefer to stay on the right side of the law myself. Thanks!

Looking to sell my Gen 1 Ruger PRS in .308 Unfortunately, I've only brought it to the range one time before so it's barely used. Rifle is all stock besides the addition of the muzzle break. I want to upgrade my bow, and don't have the chance to shoot this as much as I like. Rifle w/ scope : $1300 Rifle w/out scope: $900 FFL transaction required. You can contact me at [email protected] with any questions or more pics.

Public Comments Accepted Through February 8 The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is now accepting public comment on proposed regulation changes that would allow the use of big bore air rifles as a legal implement for taking big game at certain times and places in New York, beginning in the fall 2016 hunting seasons, Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. DEC will accept written public comment on the proposed rule changes through February 8, 2016. DEC is proposing to amend the regulations found within Title 6 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (6 NYCRR section 180.3) to allow the use of certain air-powered firearms for hunting big game. Air-powered rifles that meet certain specifications, termed "big bore air rifles," have adequate downrange energy to effectively harvest New York big game species. In 2010, DEC amended these regulations to allow the use of air-powered firearms for hunting small game. "The popularity of air-powered firearms is growing, largely because of technological advancements," said Acting Commissioner Seggos. "These modern firearms produce the force necessary to efficiently harvest big game animals. In addition, because big bore air rifles are not as loud as conventional rifles or shotguns, allowing their use may make hunting more acceptable in locations with higher human densities, including areas where deer are overabundant." Big bore air rifles are available commercially, and they fire bullets of sufficient size at sufficient velocities to safely and efficiently harvest big game. These big bore air rifles would only be allowed for taking big game where other types of rifles are allowed to be used for taking big game. Use of rifles for big game hunting is allowed in most New York counties. Please visit the Rifle, Shotgun, and Bow Areas webpage on DEC's website for more information. Details of the proposed rule can be viewed in the December 23 publication of the New York State Register and on DEC's website under Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources Proposed, Emergency and recently adopted regulations - http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/34113.html#p1s1803 Citizens who wish to make formal public comments through February 8 may do so by sending an email to: [email protected] (include "air rifle regulations" in the subject line) or by writing to: Bryan L. Swift, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Bureau of Wildlife, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754.

Starting to look for a new brush gun. My dad has an old Remington 760 Gamemaster that has been an absolute meat maker for the past 20 years. I was looking at the new Remington 7600's and didn't get the same feel and "magic" as I do with his older gun. Does anyone out there shoot one of the new 7600s and can offer feed back on accuracy? I was also looking a lever actions but I have no experience with them. BLR's seem like an interesting hybrid between bolt and lever guns but are pricey. I also have been looking at Marlin Model 336s, but they have had quality issues as of late with the Remington Acquisition. Thoughts?

Getting back to NY hunting after a long time away...been told we're now allowed to rifle hunt certain areas of the southern zone that have been closed before. Someone at NYDEC told me I was good to hunt an area in the southern part of zone 8F. Is that true? Also, I plan to pick up a non-res license today....also told I could buy a doe tag right there at the same time for zone 8F. Also true? Thank you, all.... - NH guy

Hi All, I am new to the huntingny forum and new to Region 8. I recently moved to the Painted Post area and have been doing some scouting around. Has anyone ever hunted Erwin Wildlife Management Area, Pinnacle State Park, or McCarthy Hill State Forest during gun season? I'm curious on how many hunters head to these areas since it's near the PA border. I'm just trying to find a place where I won't get shot and have a chance to see some deer. Thanks!

Hi All, I am new to Steuben county (I live in Painted Post/Erwin) and new to the forum. I have been an avid hunter since I turned 12 and have hunted in both NY and PA (most of the time in western PA where I grew up). I haven't bow hunted in a few years, but I recently got the Mathews out to see if I still could shoot. I also rifle and muzzleloader hunt. I am in the process of scouting out Pinnacle State Park, McCarthy Hill State Forest, and Erwin WMA. If anyone out there could offer any suggestion on a gun club (I can hear the Painted Post gun club from my house), I would appreciate it as I need a safe place to sight in my guns. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi all, New hunter here. I have gear and tags (no gun). I live in New York City where the hunting isn't great (unless you're a fan of 8th Avenue pigeon). I would really appreciate the opportunity to go hunting with someone or a group of hunters. I have access to a car and will go almost anywhere. I would love to learn from you and I will help in any way. I can drag, gut, help process, butcher, and even cook - anything you need. Nobody in my group of family or friends hunts, and I would like to learn so that one day I can go alone and teach my friends and future family how to hunt. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We always struggle with trying to figure out how long we should stay on a stand and this time we prove to be "dead" wrong. It took a little over 45 minutes for these dogs to show up. We usually only call a stand for 25-30 minutes but this was just one of those stands that just looked too good. Enjoy...
