Opinion on Sighting in New Bow

My 1st bow had 3 pins and was good out to about 40 yards effectively. Target out to 50 yards. MQ1 Mathews. 70 lbs draw wieght, beman ICS hunter 400 Arrows

New Helium is less wieght (big issue as I mainly stalk...) but effective range for this bow is out to 65 with 50 really being my limit. (Arrows really start to drop after 65...) ICS hunter 340's Four pins to 20 30 40 50. THe more you shoot the better you become. With 2 pins you should be OK out to 45 yards effectively and accuratly if you practice...

Good luck, hope to see pictures later in the season of your success!!!

Thanks. I'm still learning this whole bow-hunting thing. Been 3 years now. I am very comfortable out to 30-35 yards. I practice at 40 and can make the shot at a target, but who knows about a deer. I am sure that my Bear Anarchy at 345 fps shooting 50, 60 + yards is no problem but I am not good enough to take that type of shot.

My Elite is set with 3 pins- 20,40, and 60. Anything that is 25 yds or less gets the 20 pin. I find that 50 yds is smack in the middle of the 40/60 pins. Just practice at 30 yds so you know where to put your pins. It will probably be midway between the 20 and 40 pins.

Beach, shoot that bow through a chrono, in a hunting config you are not getting 345 fps. Bow manufacturers advertize IBO speed, which is with a very light arrow (just heavy enough not to explode from the force on it) and nothing on the string, meaning no peep, silencers, loop, etc. For example, by bow has a rating of 318fps IBO, in reality, with my arrows and setup, it chronos at 293fps and thats right off the bow, not at 20 or 30 yards. Dont get caught up with speed, concentrate on accuracy and arrow weight. I am actually going to make my arrows heavier this year, which is going to slow them down a bit, but I would rather have more energy be transferred to the deer.

Last year I shot a buck, a very nice one, and the angle was a bit off. We looked for that deer for 2 days, found zero blood. Im pretty sure what happened, is the entry was high and the arrow went in and hit his offside shoulder and stuck into the bone. It did not come out the other side. Mind you, my shot placement was a little off, but my 350 grain arrow even moving at 290 ish fps with a fixed blade, chisel tip broadhead was still not enough to punch through his shoulder bone. The shot was under 25 yards. I never found that deer. A light arrow will go through the rib cage just fine, but if your shot is a little off, it can cost you a deer.

yeah, speed means nothing to me. That is what it is advetised at. Who knows what it really shoots. Just know that it is WAY better than my old bow. I bought a Block Black. My old bow would stick an arrow in the target a bit. This bow, it takes 2 hands to pull them out. They go half way through. its crazy. Anyways, thanks for the arrow weight knowledtge WNY. I will look into that. I am a student of everythign i do. I always try and learn. so, I appreciate everyones insight.
