Doc
The reason that tobacco hasn't been banned is probably becasue the tobacco industry has a very powerful lobby. Since they can't make the product illegal, they tax the hell out of it in order to reduce consumption and to discourage new users. Lol .... Something really wrong with that statement. If they have such a powerful lobby that they are dictating government policies, how is it that they can't get the taxes removed? The real story is that they have found that they can get away with all this behavioral modification without passing a law. They bypass the legal system and the American public applauds. Now we want to expand that corrupted method of governing with food. Once the genie's out of the bottle, there's no stuffing him back in. As they say, "We get the system of government that we deserve".
ants
If that is really the desire., Why not make the tax , say, $100 a pack? Because way too many people would stop buying them, and the tax revenue would go through the floor. But the governments true concern is that people stop smoking??? Makes no sense at all. It's just a money grab.

Ours at work have gone up 100% in 2 yrs. Use to cost 75cents for a candy bar. Now it $1.25 as of last week. Soda is now at $1.75. Doc
Yeah just wait till they figure out how to put a special tax on undesirable guns. This lawmaking through taxes knows no bounds. It worked well on cigarettes, it will be used to modify behavior relative to food, and there is no doubt in my mind that it is only a matter of time before it occurs to them to start applying it all to guns and ammunition. Why go through all the gun hassle with the NRA and other lobbying groups to fight with when simple tax code can be employed. It's the new government method of getting around those pesky rights that everyone is always talking about. Don't like it ..... tax it! ants
Have to agree. I can see huge taxes being imposed on guns and ammo.
erussell
Thats why a flat tax would never make it through. There is to much power and perks in taxes that politicians would never give up. Repub or Demoncrat, both abuse taxes.
