Tips for Pheasant

I was thinking about doing some Pheasant hunting over my break next week over in 9H area. I've done it once before, was just wondering if there are tips i could use and no i will not have any dogs. Also what is recommend ammo to use and what choke should i use in my barrel?

If you were closer I would take you out. Any way, no more than a mod choke, no more than 6 shot and you can get them with less obviously.

Stomp cover and drive them towards open areas to try to make them fly as they are runners. Look for out of the way spots and stuff near wet areas.

I have seen one pheasant in the past 5 years . What beautiful birds .

A club I belonged to used to buy birds and turn them loose . They didn't survive . With many hedgerows gone they lost a lot of cover . The fox and yotes would get them . A couple of the "helpers" who were releasing the birds were caught with guns and dogs while doing this ( so I had been told ) .

I only ever went pheasant hunting twice . Got one my 2nd time out . Didn't care for the taste and never bothered to hunt them again .

You wont appreciate bird hunting with a dog until you do it, but without a dog it helps to know what they sound like.

thanks for the link, I wish i had a dog it would be way more enjoyably. Personally as long as i see a couple of pheasants im fine.

The best part about hunting over dogs is if you don't find birds at least you have the dogs to watch/train.

Like I did this afternoon, no birds but got some quality training done and found deer sign in the process.

How did you train your dog(s), DOEWHACKER. Along with training dogs is there a specific breed for that duty or can i train any type of dog to do that task at hand like a German Sheppard, Siberian husky or a Shetland sheep, etc....

I hunted pheasants for years, but with dogs. But we use to just kick around for them as kids, before we really got into it. You can be productive just kicking for them, but an extra guy or two wouldn't hurt, to watch the sides of hedgerows or spread out through a field. BE CAREFUL & know where everyone is.

Game loads of #7 1/2 or # 6 through a mod. choke will work well. My all time favorite combo was #6 through an Improved Cylinder choke.

With a dog, not that I have been that successful, they jump up 3 or 4 feet rith in your face and then turn and fly so an open choke on that first shot isn't a bad idea.

People use pointers to point and labs or spaniel types to just flush. You can walk slower with a pointer.
