Online Travel Services? Good/Bad Experiences?

Looking for experiences with booking through online travel services? I've always dealt with travel agents, face to face. Looking into booking online and was wondering if one online service (Bookit.com, expedia, travelocity, etc...) is better/more reliable than another?

I tend to have better luck with Travelocity overall.

There are also better times of the day and days of the week to search and book travel (ie not the actual trip, but when you are looking on the sites themselves). I believe it is best to look on Tuesdays at some point.

I've used travelocity quite a few times, never had a problem.

I used expedia for hotel+airfare deals. Tuesdays-Wednesdays seem the best time to book.

I've used Travelocity, Expedia, and Orbitz. Don't like Orbitz. I use Travelocity and only go with Expedia if they find me a cheaper rate which is rare because it's usually the same.

Other than price, are there other advantages of going with one over the other? Looking to book a family vacation and really don't want any surprises... or "whoops". I like knowing if something goes wrong, I can pick up the phone and speak to my agent, to have them straighten things out, if I can't.

You should be fine with Travelocity. The packages are pretty straightfoward and calling them is fairly easy.

No, they're all pretty much the same. If there are any surprises, you can call them up just like an agent and speak with a customer rep. They might just route you to the airlines customer rep instead at he very worst.
