burmjohn
Youth Hunt info also here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/86468.html New York's first Youth Firearms Deer Hunt was held during the Columbus Day weekend, October 6-8, 2012. During the youth deer hunt, 14-15 year old junior hunters could take 1 deer, antlered or antlerless, with a firearm or crossbow when properly accompanied by a licensed and experienced adult mentor. See the Youth Deer Hunt Photo Gallery for pictures of successful junior hunters. 2012 Results Final Report: 2012 Youth Deer Hunt in New York State (PDF) (677 kB) 1,411 deer taken (53% antlered and 47% antlerless deer) 61% of eligible junior hunters participated (7,779) non-participation was primarily influenced by lack of awareness of the Youth Deer Hunt and, to a lesser degree, by time conflicts during Columbus Day weekend. The Youth Deer Hunt was a safe hunt. No safety violations or injuries were reported, and no junior hunters were cited for hunting violations. WNYBuckHunter
Some neat stats to look at, especially page 20, which shows hunter numbers and success rates from 1980 until last year. That adult male number reported on DMPs is interesting. I wonder how that happened. Maybe its a flaw with the report?
landtracdeerhunter
Page 15 is of intrest to me. Since 2005, about 45% of hunter report their harvest. Jump 2 years ahead, reporting rate is much higher, or when the old paper tags were used.
G-Man
my neighbor who is a meat hunter waits for bucks to lose horns before he shoots them on purpose, bigger deer = more meat.. killed some monsters with huge pedicals over the years. But its his choice as much as I would like to see them with horns the following year.
