Cold Spring Harbor Goose Hunting

To goose hunt in Cold Spring I think it may all have to be done by boat in the harbor somewhere.  I remember seeing some duck boat down there but not in a while.

Better be real sure of the rules when banging away with a 12 guage as there are some expensive houses around there and I doubt they would put up with any shenanigans or hunters for that matter.

yea I hear you agross it is a very wealthy area I am sure its a rough place to hunt waterfowl.  We are trying to find a place to go for geese and it is not easy.  Must have been on the phone with the dec about 10 times and they are no help what so ever.  Neither are the Suffolk county parks its crazy no one seems to know a damn thing about it!

As I live within ear shot of CSH,All waterfowl hunting there is done via floating duck blind. There was an issue several years ago with conflicting laws between the Town of Huntington and NYS.The town says there is no discharging of firearms within the town,Yet NYS DEC said it was legal to waterfowl hunt in the harbor as long as you obeyed the laws pertaining to distances from houses. I know of several hunters who were met at the dock and issued summons for violating "Town" law.The summons were fought and I believe it was resolved.

see if you can find info on hunting the tidal wetlands, I used to hunt a piece that was in Timber point on the Connetquot River next to the golf course............not sure what type of access is there these days, but we used to park and walk in................from what I remember we used to get an access pass from DEC.......not near Cold Spring Harbor, but the best I can offer...........and there's a few more along the South Shore.

I used to hunt timber point until a couple of years ago. It was incredible. We were always a little unsure of the legality. But, the bay constibles that are right there never gave us a hard time. We used to hunt right on one of the fairways on the blue course. We'd put out goose decoys and we'd flag and call them in from all directions. We'd kill brant and the occasional puddle ducks. We even got a couple of snow geese one day. We used to bring shovels and clear away the snow to open up a grassy area for birds to land. Eventually we were told that we were not allowed to hunt there and we haven't been back since. But, it was amazing while it lasted. It was also especially cool because I grew up in the same town. So, it was really convenient.

from the research I have done timber point is legal to hunt.  I will confirm this with the dec Monday as I plan to go on a hunt with a few friends from huntingny.com next weekend.  We are aiming to bag our first Canadian geese! Wish me luck!

yes, Timberpoint is legal to hunt, just not on the golf course itself.

sweet thanks man what time do you think I should get there on sat in order to beat the crowd?  I drove by cold spring harbor and it looked like a ton of snow geese if that's even possible!?  No way it was 2 dozen swans had to be snow gizzards

these are swans. they are > 60 swans living there in the cold spring harbor bay.

The information taught in this free course will be very valuable in understanding the complex layers of science, politics, and controversies inherent to setting hunting policy. NY Dove Hunting recommends and hopes our members take advantage of this free course. Remember this is a free course without a grade, so like anything else, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

Had a great hunt today with my buddy John. We managed to scratch out a two man limit of teal,
      mallards and ring neck ducks.

We want to close our mute swan petition this month and ask for more people to help out by signing it and encouraging others to sign it. We will be launching a petition to legalize dove hunting in the near future and certainly hope the response is much better than we have had with the mute swan issue.

For those of you  think we are a lone wolf in this hunt, read the first link below from Maryland DNR. This has been brewing in the Atlantic Flyway for some time, including a supreme court decision in our favor. However, in NY, the legislature sided with animal rights organizations over the DEC, FWS, Atlantic Flyway Council, Universities, and large conservation organizations. The second link below is to the petition. You can read the signatures and see if you know anyone. Rick McGovern and Tom P, from this site who run the Crossbow Coalition have signed it. Rick is also on our face book page, by the way. The president of the NY Trappers Association has signed, So have many others you all know. Please also sign and share right away.

Refer to this: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/dnrnews/infocus/comments.html Please sign this petition to allow NY's state wildlife agency to continue to make management decisions about mute swans that are consistent with the rest of the Atlantic Flyway Council. In addition to the importance of eradicating this deleterious introduced species; interference with policy regarding mute swans can set a precedent for politics to guide policy regarding other alien species and ultimately, all native species as well. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/832/485/616/veto-s-065889-a-and-a-08790-a/
