Was walking thru an area about 150 yards from my stand today. I mustve counted 20 scrapes, most of em fresh and a ton of rubs. Some scrapes i could smell from 10 feet away. Im guessing since we arent seeing him from the stand....hes moved :) thinking a move might be good before the action really picks up!

Very true.I am not saying dont do it I am saying the next time he goes over to hunt it.The more times you put boots on the ground thats another chance you may get busted.I do a a ton of moving around during season but I make sure when I do scouting I either have a stand on my back to put up or am ready the next time I go,I know a bunch of people that will keep checking the place out then hang a stand a week later and by that time you have told every deer in the area you where there.

Think this is gonna be an area for my lil strap on treeseat. Bunch of thick stuff on one side for a great backdrop. Probably go in and put the treeseat up and snip a few small shooting lanes. Nothing too intrusive. Ive already seen the rubs and i can tell which way he likes to travel...

That steady pattern of a buck travelling that route will soon change unfortunately. I have found that this time of year giving it a couple of days doesn't hurt as much as say a week or two from now when they are chasing. Machinist said it best, jump the big one and he is most likely out of there and nocturnal. Set up and knock him down!

I think he means using srew in pegs could make more noise, make you sweat so there is more scent. just a guess. I do agree that hunting fresh sign as fast as possible is your best bet, but in my experience i have burned out too many spots by getting right on them and hunting hard. the land i hunt get pressured and deer easily go nocturnal.

While I am not the most mobile hunter, I do fine with my LW and sticks. I know many that are faster with hang-ons than a climber.

A climber is just another hang and hunt tool in the shed. I've hung and hunted ladders with results.

I understand what he is saying, but sometimes climbers simply don't work in certain areas. A LW and sticks will work in every hangable tree.

Hang and hunt is no different than a climber.

Screw ins, sticks, ladders? Hoisting the stand up, hanging it. Sure you might kill a doe, but a nice buck is out of there. A good stand needs the lanes trimmed, approach trail cut... Heck we do all this in early spring. One more trip in September to trim summer growth. I don't even like checking cams. A climber in the right area not needing lane cutting is a quick shimmy up the tree. I rarely climber hunt but would choose that over disturbing any area.

That's what I mean. I just bought a Summit MLB Specialist. 16 lbs with padded seat or 14 lbs with a sling style. I bought it to get to those types of spots where you can get in and set up at a moments notice given the right tree. My older brother finally took his bow hunter education and the instructor said how people setting up a treestand spend too much time hunting for the right tree rather than actually hunting. I thought that was a good point to bring up. Case and point: a few days ago I headed deep in the woods to my usual rifle spot. Kind of a recon/big doe mission as I already filled my buck tag. I brought the climber and went in a little further in than usual. I found a small clearing that looked like a route to a bedding area. I found a suitable tree and was about to set up but then I decided to poke down the hill another 20 yards. I jumped a deer from a large bed with a fresh rub about 5 feet away. I find it is hard to let good enough alone. I could have probably set up the climber with no trouble but with a hang on I personally would have made too much noise.

might be a great spot to hunt now while its still hot

It's not hot here 20's - 30's at night and high 40's during the day Might be hot for the younger croud, but when you get to the age where you get a free archery and MZ. license it's not hot.

Question why do you have to put up another stand.have you ever used a ground blind ?.
