Anything Goes Hunting

My favorite time of year, all the hunting seasons are open, so most everything is fair game. I am going to start dabbling with varmint calls and see if I can get anything to turn up. I still have a DMP so I may go for another Deer if the right one comes along. I am still looking to kill my first black squirrel, saw one the other day but did not have a shot. The one thing I have completely lost interest in is the Turkeys, I have plenty on them around and have had many opportunities, but they just do not appeal to my anymore. I am looking forward to some bird hunting (Grouse)but I will wait for these overly long Deer seasons to end. The hardest part is being equipped with a firearm that can handle everything and anything that comes into play. Probably one of those combination guns in the right chamberings would fit the bill. The Marlin 62 256 Winchester may work for most game if I can take Squirrels without ruining them, the big game bullets I have loaded for it may just punch hole in small game like a Squirrel, I know I can kill a Deer with it if I get the right shot.

Ya man.  Absolutely no reason for a guy with an outdoor interest not to have more than enough critters to chase. Tis the season.

You need some kind of over-and-under. Is that legal to deer hunt with a .22 barrel and a deer caliber as an over and under rifle? You might consider a double barrel 20 gauge with slug on one side and shot on the other side. Is that legal? Frankly, I am getting at the point where I could forget about the deer and just load up for squirrels.

You know Doc, I think you may be on to something, I have several doubles, I think if I put those clamp on the rib adjustable turkey sights and I can get one of the barrels hitting to the point of aim with decent accuracy I will be in business.

Might as well go down another "Rabbit Hole", outfitted my LC Smith double with adjustable sights. Now when I get a chance to try some slugs hopefully one of the barrels will put them on target. If I can get it to group slugs I will have a combination gun. Should help centering shot patterns to the point of aim also.

I’ve checked my J. Stevens Springfield 16 ga side by side with slugs and they cross the bulls eye at 50 yards.  Beyond that the right barrel hits to the left and the left barrel hits to the right.  
 

I’ve never fired it at a deer but I have carried it a few times in hopes of getting a shot at one.  I probably will again this year (if I still have my buck tag) up in the NZ over Thanksgiving weekend.

I am expecting results to be similar to yours wolc, I never had spectacular accuracy with any shotgun firing foster type slugs, especially from barrels that are choked. If I can find a slug that will group say four inches at 50 yards out of one of the barrels and get it hitting to the point of aim I would be satisfied and could make it work in a pinch. To be truthful I ain't holding my breath, still it is the kind of stuff I like fooling around with.

I’m packing that gun on that trip Thanksgiving NZ trip whether or not I still have a buck tag.  It and my Remlin 336BL fits in one of my lockable hard sided gun cases (necessary during transport per NY Safe act) and I’ll bring my scoped Ruger M77 in my second hard case, if I still have my buck tag.  
 

If I punch that buck tag during the first week of the southern zone gun season at home, then I’ll bring my Ruger 10/22 in the second case and the side by side 16 ga. in the other.  I’ll still bring slugs for that, in case I run into a black bear, but grouse and number 7-1/2’s will be  the primary task.  The .22 is for squirrels and coyotes.
