Santamour123
What do you think the yearly bear take in NY is by legal bear hunter. No bait, No dog and not killing them while deer hunting. I mean go out for a bear and kill a bear. My guess is very very few.
Doc
Probably nearly unheard-of. I would guess that most of the bears taken are strictly a result of an accidental encounter.
Culvercreek hunt club
I would bet that the vast majority are a byproduct of deer hunting. Funny you mentioned baiting though. I have come across 2 bait sites in the last 2 years in area 5H. I sent the coordinates to DEC but never heard if they got the guys. I am betting there is a lot of illegal bear baiting that goes on
RPIBuckHunter
Of course when I'm deer hunting I carry the bear tag just in case, because you never know. I was thinking next fall to maybe try the early bear season in the Adirondacks. I realize there's a good chance it will turn in to nothing more than a camp out and nature walk, but nothing wrong with that! Especially in the Adirondacks-best scenery on the planet? Probably. steve863
Especially in the Adirondacks-best scenery on the planet? Probably. Hmmm. Adirondacks are nice. I have vacationed there several times. As far as the best scenery on the planet? Not even close in my opinion. Not even the best in our country. Just my .02.

I guess we just have to agree to disagree-I've traveled all over the world in North America, Europe and Asia and still like the Adirondacks best. But I suppose it's a distance factor too, I can take a week to drive to Alaska or an hour to drive to the Adirondacks-makes the choice easy for a weekend getaway. Yes, you are right about the distance factor. That is why I like the Adirondacks also, because they are easy to get to. But I just can't see how visually they can compare to other spots in the US and elsewhere that are far more breathtaking to look at. Everyone has their own tastes, that's for sure. CNYScott
I've heard from many hunters, DEC officers and outdoor reporters that the vast majority of NY bear kills are chance encounters by deer hunters. I've been on three Adirondack by-the-book hunts for bear around the Saranac Lake area and the closest I've gotten to even seeing a bear is a pile of scat and a tree ripped open for its bugs. A very tough hunt without baiting or hounds.
the blur
I saw the biggest bear tracks the other day while deer hunting. Had to be 400lbs. But this property doesn't allow taking bear. so I was happy I never saw yogi.
Mr VJP
There is a farm up the road from me where the hunters are only after bear. The farmer has been having trouble with them and has about 7 around his farm. These are specifically targeted, but the hunters know they are there. Either way, it makes for an exciting bear hunt! ;D
the blur
Can you take bear during ML season ? 1 shot, and you better hope yogi runs the other way
Culvercreek hunt club
Can you take bear during ML season ? 1 shot, and you better hope yogi runs the other way In the Z it is open during ML in the appropriate areas. My father shot a bear during Northern ML last year ...It was his first year with a ML. after I heard him shoot I called him on the radio to ask if he got anything....he was a nervous wreck and trying to get a second shot loaded....hands shaking and the whole bit...lol. it went right down but a very calm day....and while that white cloud was hanging there between him and the bear blocking his view he was thinking ..." I wonder how it would take that bear to cover the 65 yards"....lol. The bear had dropped in it's tracks though.
