Old Winchester 1873 Found in the Desert

Recommended Posts

I picture a couple different scenarios:

  • somebody kicking themselves, "that's where I left grampa's rifle"
  • someone lost track of it while retrieving their black-tail deer
  • left it chasing down their spooked horse

I agree, don't think it has been out there since the late 1800's or early 1900's, would've thought there would be a lot more deterioration on the barrel and stock.  Fun article to read.

Skeets, like the signature, my favorite Frost poem.

The metal reminds me of some of the abandoned vehicles and hydraulic mining equipment from the 1930's that I have seen in the Rockies.  But I would think the stock would be gone if it sat there in the open since the 1880's.  Unless they had better finishes back then.

In a desert.. can't see if tree was growing around it as its slow growing.. I'd be looking for a campsite area and a body if no sign of one it's older than u think... Guns were life back then.. you didn't leave them to far out of reach..

If only guns could talk....

I think about that with some of my military rifles...

A Russian M-N made in 1917....A german K98K made in 1938...A Springfield Armory Garand M1 made in 1943...A Canadian SMLE #4 made in 1944... 6.5 and a 7.7 Jap Arisakas, date unknown, but WWII vintage..
