WNYBuckHunter
Ive been thinking about doing one of our plots all in chickory this year. Any tips from you guys (or gals) on that?
ATbuckhunter
I hear that you can maximize the plot if you plant clover and chickory together.
WNYBuckHunter
I have heard of lots of people planting just Chickory. I have a couple of plots that have been in brassicas for a few years and its time to give them a rest. We have a ton of clover on the property already, as weve been over seeding and frost seeding our trails in it, as well as a good size clover plot going in this year. Just want to mix things up a bit. growalot
I like chicory but love small Burnett as well. So I plant them together...because they are non nitrogen fixing there is always clover added for that and to help crowd out weeds. The Deer hit the Burnett hard BTW. G-Man
I tend to stay away from chickory, once it's established it's tough to get rid of,I use a rotation of wheat, clover, corn, alfalfa, and brassica. Once in a while I do sunflowers in a few fields.
phade
I was just talking about this with a friend of mine who has alot of food plots. He's a big fan of chickory - even over clover. Says the deer just hammer it.
growalot
Both chicory and Burnett are long term plantings with long tap roots...thus bringing up many needed nutrients without the need of deep tillings keeping compaction down...I have killed off many such plantings over the years in my rotations....it's never been a problem...there is just one plant that has given me problems...rape..that's why I do not plant it now. WNYBuckHunter
Grow, how many lbs per acre do you plant of the burnett? Do you use one of the food plot company seeds or just regular salad burnett seeds?
growalot
I plant in a mix and at 5# per acre. I use Delmar small Burnett and the last time I bought it ....it was From a seed company on line...I' have to look up which one. IT was through Agway And cost way too much....long story...anyhow ...Fridges Forage has the cheapest price Edited January 23, 2015 by growalot
WNYBuckHunter
I found it cheaper than fridged forrage. Deer Creek Seed. I think Im gonna mix it with chickory. Ill see if I can get it cheaper at Turners. Did or do you fertilize it?
growalot
Yes but due to the legumes I plant with it ....It was a 10_20_20...
