rotorooter23
Good Afternoon fellow members, Now that a lot of counties are switching over to rifle, I am currently stuck in a shotgun county (Broome).I am looking into getting a 11-87 Special Purpose from a family member. I am hoping to make this my deer gun. Growing up I have always wanted a 11-87. For what reason? I have no idea. I hunt now with a pumpkin flinging 870 smooth bore. Had some pretty good success so far but I am ready to move up to a Semi-auto. The problem I run into is the gun has a bird barrel. It looks like I am going to have to buy a rifled barrel and they look like they are running around $250-300. Is this worth it? The plan is to put a 2-7x scope made by Nikon on it paired with a 21 in. rifled barrel. I may look into putting in a Timney Trigger Fix into the trigger if I get a wild hair. The gun already has a B-square mount on it. What was everyone's favorite slug gun before the rifle boom? Anyone use to use the 11-87? stoneam2006
I am in a rifle county and currently own and hunt with 2 mossberg 500 rifled barrel scoped slug guns. One in 20g one in 12g both are accurate past 100 and even 150 is very very achievable with a well selected round and scope...i personally would not hunt with a smooth bore after using a rifled barrel IMO they are worth ever bit of it....but rounds are drasticly more expensive also...my guns both really like hornady sst 2 3/4 or federal fusion 3 in Edited March 3, 2015 by stoneam2006

Pygmy
I do have an 11-87, but it is my turkey/goose gun...Never shot slugs through it. However my main deer guns for MANY years prior to the legalization of rifles here in Steuben were Rem 1100s. which are very similar to the 11-87. For many years I used a 20 gauge 1100 with a skeet barrel and a reciever mounted Weaver k 1.5 scope. Grouped well enough with Brenneke slugs to stay on a 9" paper plate out to 100 yards or so. I killed a lot of deer with it. Then when rifled shotgun barrels became available, I decided to take advantage of the accuracy advantage. Not many rifled barrels were available at that time for the 20 gauge, so I bought a 21" fully rifled cantilever barrel for my 12 gauge 1100. I mounted a Weaver K2.5 scope on it..With Winchester standard velocity BRI sabot slugs it shoots 2" to 4" groups at 100 yards. I killed a lot of deer with it. However beyond 100 yards, it drops like a rock. About the time that the present variety of long range sabot slugs became available, rifles were legalized here and I haven't hunted with a shotgun since. Your 11-87 with the rifled barrel should work fine...You will ENJOY the much reduced recoil of the gas operated action, compared to your shoulder busting 870. You may need an aftermarket trigger..I was lucky with my 1100s..Both of them had pretty decent triggers for shotguns..With today's selection of shotgun slug/bullet loads you should be able to end up with a gun that shoots well enough for clean kills at ranges well over 100 yards. Good luck.

Mr VJP
If I were you, I'd stick with the 870 and get a rifled barrel for it with the cantilever mount on it for the scope. You can find a used barrel for an 870 online for about $200 and that's all you would need to spend besides the scope. The 11-87 will cost the price of the gun and the barrel. I have always preferred a pump over a semi for slugs anyway. I like the reliability of a 12ga pump gun over a semi. Currently my slug gun is a Savage 210 rifled bolt gun in 3" 12 gauge with upgraded trigger, Nikon 2x7 and full camo. It is rifle accurate out to 100 yards with sabots. Another thing........I would think that the used gun or used barrel market would be at an all time high right now. There has to be plenty of guys looking to get out of the slug shooting business with the advent of rifle legalization. I'd scour your LGS (local gun store) market and see what they have. rotorooter23
Thanks everyone! Yeah that will be the next stop is my local shop. Now here is another question. Since it is a 11-87 special purpose does that mean I need a barrel specific to the special purpose model? I know there is 11-87 sportsman and 11-87 premier. It's my understanding they only differ in finish. I could be wrong? Bear with me as these came out when I was born!

Pygmy
The barrels are interchangable between all 11-87s within the same gauge, of course.. The Sportsman and Premier differ from the SP only in finish.. In fact MOST but not all parts are interchangable between 1100s and 11-87s.
Mr VJP
You need the Special Purpose barrel if you want the finish on it to match the gun. Finish is the only difference.
The_Real_TCIII
I've got an 11-87 with a cantilevered slug barrel and scope, I love that thing. It's a tack driver. I haven't had a rifle kill yet that the slug gun wouldn't have made. Most of my gun kills are in bow range lol
Pipecrew
I used to hunt with my 11-87 but have since switched to a Browning BAR in 30-06. I actually had a brand new rifled barrel for it at one time. At the time I hunted the northern zone with my rifle and used the 11-87 for ducks. After a couple years I sold the rifles barrel because I couldn't find a place to hunt in the southern zone. A year or 2 later I got permission to hunt a nice property in the southern zone. I ended up buying a smooth barrel with a rifled choke tube from the guy I sold my barrel to. I shot cheapo Remington slugger slugs with my 11-87. I killed 7-8 deer with it. I never had any problems with this set up. I had my scope dialed in at 75 yards. After 75 yards those pumpkins really started dropping!!!!! Borngeechee
I went a slightly cheaper route and got me an H&R 20 gauge and topped it with a Bushnell 1.75x4. It's an awesome single shot.

I think it's almost ideal for the NY woods. I do like the Savage 220 but I don't think it's too worth it since it only has a 2 round capacity.
sbuff
You might want to think about getting a muzzle loader, now a days they are accurate past 150 yards once you find the right combo. Not to mention you get extra time in the field with the added seasons
sbuff
Not to mention you can get 50 sabots for 6 bucks or so and 50 hornady xtps for 16 bucks, far cheaper then any shotgun slug, rifled or not
