1. The youth hunter or mentor must submit a picture of the youth or of the two of them with their harvest.

2. A brief story of the hunt, preferably written by the youth, must be submitted.

3. You must post both your picture and story on this thread only!!! PLEASE DO NOT START ANOTHER THREAD FOR THE CONTEST ENTRY!!

4. The deadline for submitting your entry is 12:00am ( midnight ) on April 29.  So if you harvest a bird make sure to enter it on this thread before then!!

The winner will be chosen based on a combination of best picture and story submitted.  The size of the bird WILL NOT be taken into account, although we encourage that you post the birds stats.  As far as the judges are concerned all birds harvested are a trophy!!

There will be some great prizes given away this year and we wish everyone a safe and successful hunt!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

Well only got to take my daughter out Sat morning. Had everything set up pefect.  Had 2 birds fly right down to within 30 yards to the left of the decoys fanning no clear shot yet, and next thing I know one came in silent from the right up a gully, and was in my decoys at less then 10 yards fanning. Daughter tryed to swing he gun to the right, she is a lefty and bird busted her, she managed to get a shot, but did not connect. No Sunday hunt as she had a friends birthday sleep over Sat. So will try again this Sat for her.

SATURDAYS REPORT:

I went out Friday night and roosted some birds, they roosted well into the neighboring property so we set up on the edge hoping they would come our way either on their own or by being called in.So Friday at 430 I picked up my nephew and we made the hike out there. What stunk is we walked right past another set of toms that gobbled all am and that were on my friends property,oh well.So then the tom I had roosted started hammering away,he was alone as far as I could tel as I didn't here one bit of hen talk and we were fairly close to him(100 or so yards).I had him cutting my light calls off so I shut up and wanted to wait till he was on the ground. That's when a few real hens came out of the roost and started talking to the west of us and that was done,he pitched down and headed that way.So we set out after him but they went across the road.We then tried to find the other toms we heard but had no luck.At 9 we drove to another property and saw a good size group in a field so we made a plan and went after them.We made a big loop and stopped about 75 yards from the field edge in some pines and started to call.they wouldn't budge, just feeding and strutting around till behind us we heard a couple of gobbles that were super close but just over the edge of a hill and we couldn't see them.they must have either been a few different birds or one strutting back and forth gobbling from different locations. He wouldn't commit to come in so I decided to just stop calling and and see if that would work.It made him fire up more and more so i decided to do some leaf scratching. He stayed there till quitting time. After not hearing him for 20 mins we got up and left the other way just in case he was still there.

SUNDAYS REPORT:

We went down to a friends camp that does a youth hunt every year, there was 4 youth hunters in camp.Saturday night we went to a local farm that gives permission to the youth hunt for access and we roosted a group of birds that had a gobbler in it.Sunday am Myself,Reed(nephew),a father and son(they don't hunt but wanted to see what hunting was all about) and a friend of my friend who called for us.We got set up and soon they started gobbling,we thought they were coming in from our right so Reed and I switched seats. After a few mins I say a group walking away from us that probably saw us moving. So we sat and called for another 20-30 mins with not a thing happening. The caller and I decided to try and cut the other group off,we got up and had a group 30 yards away in a gully take off that we didn't know was there. We hunted the rest of the day and only had a few gobbles right around noon at a different place. All in all we had a great time,he said he got amp'ed up when they were gobbling close and cant wait to go back out....another one successfully hooked into huntin!!! I also have a great pic of Reed taking a little cat nap late in the day Sunday but I wont be mean and post it,well maybe later I will!!HAHA

My First Turkey.

Hello! My name is Nathan Brand and during the youth turkey hunt last weekend I got my first turkey. I have been hunting since I was thirteen (now fifteen) and had never seen any wildlife while hunting other than the occasional fat red squirrel until this trip. Encouraged by my cousin’s successful hunt last year I decided to go out with my uncle and get a turkey myself. It started with waking up sometime around 5:00 am at my uncle’s cabin down in Cuba, NY and to my surprise, no breakfast. My excitement overcame my hunger and I dressed in camo quickly. Before heading my uncle handed me his favorite turkey gun (Mossberg 835 and some Winchester XR 3½ in 6 shot turkey load) upon taking it he said, “Now, that is the hardest kicking shotgun out there, and yes harder than Ron’s 10ga. It’s a bit lighter so it’ll kick a bit more.” Running this through my head a wave of doubt quickly came and went thanks to the excitement. We began our walk before the sun came up occasionally using various calls. Within a mile or so we sit up against some trees calling just as the sun begins to light up the sky. We sit for about an hour calling and wait and at one point I think I hear my uncle say “I see a head” so I instantly strained my eyes at what appeared to be a thin white ‘head’ moving around at 60 yards. Unfortunately it wasn’t a head. I still have no idea what he said but after an hour we got up and as I look to my dismay it was a bit of snow. My eyes had been playing tricks on me. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and kept moving. Some 100 yards later we sit down at a crossroad of paths and begin calling again. On the first call we actually hear something and this was our exchange, “Did you hear that?”…”No.”…”Okay I’ll call it again”…”Did you hear it that time?”...”Nope.”…”*sigh* You gotta stop using your earbuds you’re killing your hearing! Okay let’s try again”…”YUP Heard it that time!”…”Okay the first reply was about 400 yards that way, lets go.” This being the first time ever getting close to an actual animal during a hunt and my heart starts pounding as we race down a path and to turkeys. We end up on a side of a ravine with a small stream in the middle and the other side at approximately 60 yards. As we sit down my uncle begins calling again and lets me know the turkeys are coming. Again I strain my eyes as my uncle tries to tell me where they are but I just don’t see them anywhere. Out of the corner of my eye I see a movement by a brush pile near the top of the other side and instantly know it’s a turkey. As I watch a Jake and Tom come strutting into sight, the Tom doesn’t even stop and quickly leaves noticing the lack of a hen where we were. As the Jake gets closer and closer I realize my safety is on, my red dot sight is off and I’ve yet to raise the gun. Not good. Quickly making the adjustments I raise my gun a little too quickly and I am instantly spotted. The Jake begins to turn towards a small creek running down the side of the ravine just as I get the little red dot on the turkey’s neck my uncle says, “Shoot now!” which is quickly followed by a loud BANG. I see the turkey flop over into the creek and don’t believe my eyes for a second. I had actually hit it. As I slowly get up I notice my knees are shaking and I’m standing there grinning like an idiot looking to my uncle and then the spot where I last saw the turkey, and back to my uncle, and to the turkey, and my uncle until he finally tells me to go get it. I quickly pump out the empty shell and run down the hill with my uncle until we get to the creek. Slowly I walk up it trying not to slip and while grabbing it by its legs. Looking at it I could tell it was a runt and pretty ugly (I later learned other turkeys had picked on it and ripped out some of its feathers) but I didn’t care as I came back with the grin still on my face. All in all the beard length was 5 ¼ inches, shot was made at 50 yards, it was a year old, and around 15 pounds or so. Walking back I carried my bird and gun laughing at funny stories of my cousin my uncle had from his hunt last year. At the end I’m proud to say I added to that Gun's count for turkeys, which is now in the mid fifties! Can't wait for next time! !post-899-0-47599700-1430320376_thumb.jpgpost-899-0-46528000-1430320415_thumb.jpg
