Pond built after all...Mr B is going to look at a pretty nice looking dozer today....Man what I could do with one of those....refuse to get hopes up...but he has been looking for a while...

Don't dig it shallow no spot needs to be less than 4 ft unless you want ducks and geese, and stock it with pond (mud)crayfish for at least a year before you add fish they will control your weeds no need for a grass carp... fat head minnows and nesting structure are always good to add before fish as well. a 1/2 acre pond can support 250 lbs of fish if done properly stocking is properly right numbers to surface area is key.

Thanks for those tips...we had a local come up and dig a few places to check soils...where we wanted it was a no go but then we went to the "pond" area..and he found 5ft of grey clay....It's a natural depression just north /east of the mouth of the gully...I have been slowly cutting the trees in and around it...We had a pond guy come up and said it would make a great site...especially seeing it has clay already there to be moved and repacked...but he gave the price and then said nope they do not guarantee it will hold water..LOL...we can buy a dozer for less money do a ton of work ...and then resell if we want for less than a non guaranteed hole in the ground...

No one guarantees ponds, but grey clay is ice age deposit, you my find bones while digging ( actually very possible) worked on a site in Byron for over 20 years where a farmer wanted to dig a pond, and another in Springville where a home owner dug for a pond. Pm me if you need more info on stocking ponds I did a ton of research before I dug my ponds and would be glad to pass it on.

I had a guy guarantee our pond. He spent days doing test holes. He made good on his guarantee to filled it back in for free if it failed. I was still out the original cost of digging. He was theorizing that a vein of gravel ran too close to the wall of the pond and simply drained it faster than it could fill. This is an area that has standing water most of the year, but that doesn't say anything about what is going on just a few feet under the surface....lol.

X2 I dug one 4' to 10' deep, Spring fed ,Guess what the water runs out as fast as it goes in. Had another one dug at he bottom of a hill ,  Guess what we had very heavy rain after that it started out 10' deep and now is 4' deep . It filled up with silt that was brought down from the heavy run off from the hill . We even built a berm or bank on the side that the hill is , the water and silt washed right over it.

Do a lot of planing first.
