Pygmy
A friend of mine who longer hunts picked up a bolt action 30-06 with an older Weaver V9 scope...He told me he'd let it go for $250... He doesn't know what brand it is...It might be some cobbled up, Bubba'd monstrosity Frankengun made from a military relic.. Then again, it COULD be a diamond in the rough, like the FN Mausers that Sears and other chain stores marketed back in the 50s and 60s.. I'm going to check it out this afternoon...I need another rifle like I need a hole in the head, but if it is something decent, well, I never COULD resist a bargain..Even a military conversion might be worth that much if it's nicely done and in reasonable condition.. Pygmy
Well, I lucked out..Every now and then even a blind hog finds an acorn... The rifle was indeed a sporterized military job...However, it is an 03-A3 Remington Springfield action in a nice walnut Bishop stock...Not sure about the barrel MFG, but the bore is shiny and free of pits...The vintage Weaver V9 scope seems fine optically... The rifle is worth more than I paid for it as a shooter...I'm looking forward to shooting it, although it may not get done in time for THIS deer season...Working up a nice load for it will be a good project for next year..
grampy
Good for you! Glad you found something you like and will use, for a bargain price! Got pic's?
Pygmy
No Grampy, I'm technologically inept....It IS an attractive 03 sporter, though...Good condition, used but not abused..Can't wait to shoot her...
Pygmy
hehehehehe...This is sort of a one man conversation, but I am excited my new acquisition.. Been checking around the gun forums on the net looking at sporterized Springfields, and from what I saw there I got a SMOKIN' deal on this rifle...I could easily sell it for twice what I have in it , not that intend to...Gotta PLAY with it awhile ! I never have had a .30 caliber hunting rifle, just my Garand... Can't wait to start the process of working up loads, etc.
Dinsdale
Be very careful.... You get one of those old-man 30-06 rifles and before you know it you'll have a couple. Ask me how I know. LOL Never had a 30 cal? What are you some kind of Commie? You need a 300 RUM, better than a shot of Viagra to keep ya' young.

Pygmy
I've tried the Viagra....The pill got stuck in my throat and I had a STIFF NECK for 2 days.... Maybe the .300 RUM will work better.... Does RUM stand for Rub Up Me ???

Does RUM stand for Rub Up Me ??? Ran some full house loads in the RUM I owned in a 7 pound rifle.... Shoot a box of those off the bench in a t-shirt and ones shoulder was so stiff the next day you couldn't rub up ANYTHING. Sure did put some fair sized critters down in a hurry though! Pygmy
The .300 mags fill a very useful niche..They perform very well at long range for people who shoot them well.. As por MOI, I want no part of them... They kick too hard for me to enjoy them... I shot 12-14 rounds off the bench through my 9.3 x 62 the other day with 270 grain bullets.. Recoil was stout but not obnoxious...Any .300 mag I ever shot kicked the snot out of me...I just don't like 'em..
jmg343
My .300 win mag is a great gun, deadly accurate out to 500 yards. Kicks like a f'n mule. 20 shots at the range and I don't want to see that gun again for a month, at least.

Just missed one of those FN Sears guns a few weeks ago for a good price. Have a 30-06 in the safe I bought over a year ago and finally bought a scope and rings for; a bit on the heavy side for my tastes, will work up a load as a project this winter.
