Fouling

Hello All,

I have  a TC Triumph. I love the gun but the issue I am having is I clean it like a mad man every time I take it out hunting/target shooting and even when I think its clean, I put it away for storage and when I take it out of the safe a few months later and look down the barrel, I see fouling building up. I am not worried my barrel is starting to get pitted or will be if I can't clean this thing properly. I first tried all of the TC cleaners which I though sucked, then tried the CVA cleaning package. The CVA cleaner is definitely better but I feel like it is impossible to get this thing completely clean. I brush it, spray the foam cleaner down and let it sit and then I must run over 20 patches through the barrel. I feel like I'm doing something wrong as when you see them clean these things in the video's they run 5 patches down and its clean as a whistle (yes I know they intentionally make it look easy for marketing purposes) but still I don't think I need to soak the fun in a soapy water bath each time I shoot to get it clean. Plus I have a scope on the gun so I am not sure how I could even do that. Any advice is appreciated and is the fouling build up normal? No one ever really taught be about black powder so I am learning as I go. Thanks for any input.

If you are using bore butter - stop.

You can strip it back to metal using brake cleaner and a copper brush followed by patches till clean. Then use a thin coating of a quality gun oil or something like Barricade Sheath. Be careful with the brake cleaner - don't let it anywhere but in the barrel. Gunscrubber works good too and is not as strong.

Tried bore butter the first few times then realized it was a problem. Haven't used it in over a year and am still getting fouling. I run a pre oiled cva patch down when I am done cleaning, but still getting fouling. I know my problem is I'm not getting the barrel completely clean, but I can't spend two hours cleaning a gun. should I be running soapy water down the barrel and then brushing the hell out of it? I feel like the cleaners should do the same thing as the water but it doesn't seem the get all the powder residue out.

Attach a smal plastic hose to the nipple and place end in hot boiling soapy water, scrub up and down with patch on ram.rod water will.be drawn up the barrel, it should be hot enough that you need to hold the barrel with an oven mitt. Dry and coat with a lite gun oil, will stay clean and eliminate your problem. Snap a few caps to get rid of oil and reload for season...

currently Hodgdon triple seven 50 grain pellets.....I heard blackhorn 209 burns a lot cleaner so I am going to switch to that after the season.

Blackhorn should eliminate your problem! It takes me less than 5 minutes to clean my gun now. My "newish" smoke pole has only ever shot blackhorn and a lot of it, into the 4th pound and the barrel looks brand new.

Same Same .I scrub and scrub  hopps 9 the hell out of it and then .....dirty patch repeat same again Tc triumph running a barnes spitfire mz and blackhorn does the pushing. Whats the deal with the bore butter is it wrong to use it? i store mine every year with that stuff in the barrel its always nasty when I pull out the gun and get it readdy to shoot  Its kinda like I didnt do a good job cleaning it. Ok it takes me two to three days of soaking and scrubbing , lots of patches.color me confused.

Bore butter is at best a moisture retardant - not a moisture barrier.

It also is not an oil but more of a waxy lube that has a tendency to build up.

Only possible use is as a patch lube for shooting round balls.

Modern mz's have modern steel barrels - just like your other firearms. They are not cast iron frying pans that can or should be seasoned.
