NYBowhunter
Its always exciting when starting a plot, best of luck. Be sure to show us pictures. What are you planning to plant? Have you tested the soil yet?
erussell
Its always exciting when starting a plot, best of luck. Be sure to show us pictures. What are you planning to plant? Have you tested the soil yet? I have 2 new plots I would like to put in This yr. 1 is a small one just inside the woods on a trail and will just require a little tilling lime and fertilizer and the other 1 is about 40 yrds by 40 yrds and brush covered. I spent a cold afternoon the other day cutting the brush off it and have about half of it done. Would like to get all the brush off before spring so I can bring the brush hog in and cut it as low as I can get it and kill the grass and get it tilled under. Im still trying to decide what to plant
SplitG2
No, new plots but need to get soil samples to see what lime and fertilizer in need on my current plots. Well now that I think about it, I'm doing 5 acres in NWSG, again not a plot but same prep work.
growalot
Always...the plans are there but I'm the only one doing the work so time is'nt always on my side...I have an are I have wanted to plant but it has to have a fence put in first....It borders the property that I've had problems with the guys...trespassing...shooting at us...ect..ect.....I have several hundred feet of 8ft chain link to install...just haven't had the time to dig holes for the posts...I won't improve any of that area until the fence is up...and I have an inclosed shooting house built...so they don't know whether I'm there or not...But...I'm still expanding this field... erussell
Seems like it would be alot easier and cheaper to just plant a thick stand of pine trees instead of a chain link fence. Plus it would look nicer and not like the Berlin wall. JMO Got out today in the freezing weather and finished up clearing away all the heavy brush. This spring I will take the mower to it and get rid of the rest of it and spray it with weed killer a few times, lime it and fertilize it and then give it a tilling and spray anything that trys to come up again. Then it should be ready for a early August planting of rape, Turnips and winter rye. Im going to give the plot I planted this yr a rest on the turnips and just plant winter rye there in the fall.Going to pick up a Mantis tiller this spring and see how it will work. Has to be better than a shovel and rake Now if I can keep the local morons off the property with there 4-wheelers ( maybe some neck high barbed wire or some tire spikes will work. I just don't understand some peoples thinking when you pile dead logs on the trail and put posted signs on all the trees around it and they still ride around it > ) I might be able to keep some deer on the property. growalot
Well the thing about pines....they take a lot of time to grow...I lined the road in wht pine...and you can still shoot into our place and quick drag a deer out....which is the problem we have with these guys...how I've been nearly shot several times....no one but us and them will see the chain link and you can't drag a deer through chain link fencing but you can pines ..Also....with gun I can shoulder shoot and they drop....but this is a good area and in bow...they run straight for the swamp next door off our place....the owner...I don't have a problem with him...it's his nephew and the ppl he brings with him...anyways has never said no to tracking...but that's just a hassle...rather have them go on to us...or run across the road to other neighbor...we own on the other side of him and the water that they head to...our land is a big... J ...the long part of J being a half mile long...here is the section I'm fencing off (PIC)...the high chain link will be towards the back and then regular fencing will be towards the front to the road with a solar top and return middle wire...then planting in a good plot...time...time time Ya I'm rotating the turnip plots this year as well...really liked how the soybeans I grew from Seedway did....they got 19 in. high even with heavy browsing and just kept regrowing .....and still set a heavy crop of beans...too bad I had the night shade problem ....hopefully I got that under control...I'm putting in a couple of perennial clover plots and a couple of new annual areas...the deer found and are digging hard in the Sucra seed mix...I have a bag and a half left over so that will be another perennial area....ahhh plans plans plans...now if the weather ...equipment and time co-operate PS...as far as cheaper...all the fencing I get....is stuff that is given to me over the years...are you kidding?...I'm so cheap....lol
SplitG2
Grow, what soybeans did you plant from seedway?
growalot
OOhh I know I have it written down some where... need to find it ...but here are some pics....The second pic shows where they had chewed it down the third time...it then grew back and set bean pods....each plant averaged 12-20 pods per plant
growalot
Ps They were not RR....I have been diligant about weed control...and that area was in good shape...until I had ..first time ever....and influx of deadly night shade....I'm not sure if I got contaminated turnip seed the year before or the increased turkey visits brought in the night shade seed...I know we have it in the general area...and that turkey can eat and deposit the seed with out harm...It is weed killer resistant....so one lrg section of the field ...I had to mow before it set berries and plant turnips...I'm hoping I got all if not most of it....until I'm sure that will remain an annual plot...beans in spring through summer and this year winter wheat What I did like about those soybeans ...beside how a small plot area 1/2-3/4 acre...held up to browse...but in the stuff I left standing ...all I had to do in fall was walk a little fertilizer and turnips and rape seed over it for a fall/winter plot...pic shows walk over growth...
