Zag
Hey all, just looking for advice on my lab. She is almost 6 yrs old and she is showing signs she might not be seeing as well as she once did. Our vet was out to the house last week and recommended some specialist take a look. I just wonder wondered if anything can be done for a dogs eyes. I don't want to go see someone that confirms my assessment and says there's nothing they can do and by the way here's your bill. growalot
Dogs can get cataracts...sometimes they can lead to blindness, sometimes not. Most times treatable and some times with needed surgery. Age,heredity, diabetes or even drug interactions can cause them.
Doewhacker
It really depends on what the dog has and if there is a reasonable treatment available. We have a French Bulldog that went blind last year due to a diagnosis that escapes me at the moment and after many thousands of dollars and multiple tests we were able to restore he sight with a rigorous medicine treatment. She was going to die with out treatment so it wasn't just blindness in her case. For a diagnosis she had to have more advanced test's than I ever have had. It's not for every one and thankfully we were able to afford the expense. Good luck
ApexerER
Wow that stinks....He/she is so young. I would get it looked at but if there isn't anything they can do...I would think a house pet could still have a quality life being blind as long as it is loved and cared for....Obviously if it is a hunting or working dog things will have to change. My guess though is that animals are very adaptable and it will probably be harder for you than the lab....Good luck...

Hopefully there is a solution, I have to turn the outside light on at night so she can navigate the 4 steps, our other lab has no issues.
