My wife and I bought 4 acres on a dead end road in 1993 and over the years have built our retirement home and a garage with an upstairs guest room and bath.  The best part is that it is in the Adirondack Park near Whiteface Mountain.  My  4 acres borders about 150,000 acres of primitive and wilderness land.  During hunting season, or for that matter anytime, I very rarely see anyone else.

How is the hunting up there?  I go up to Whiteface all the time for skiing, never thought about heading up that way for hunting though.

On topic, we don't own any land, but it's all good.  Lots of deer on state land if you know where to look. :)

It is a turnip, Dwarf Essex Rape.

The deer didn't touch it the first year I planted it until the first frost.

Now I can't keep them out of it when the greens reach 6" tall in early Sept. The deer and turkeys will wipe it out before bow season starts.

I guess the secret is to either plant more or find a way to keep the critters out until the turnips mature.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What is your herd size?

You could be beyond carrying capacity if they can wipe out a plot that big. Lower the population and go from there.

Interesting article on Carrying capacity

I have just a small peice of 12 acres that my house is on. I also have permission to hunt 20 something acres of a neighbors. It is a great bow spot and in the 10 or 11 years I have lived here I have taken 11 deer off it.

I have been traying to add to it but have not convinced any neighbors yet. I also have been looking for that perfect waterfront 75 to 150 acres for a decade now for a camp. I almost had one once but got outbid. Someday!!!

One problem is I am the only one in my area that is planting food  plots and we are sucking alot of deer from neighboring properties. Maybe that is not a bad issue for me during hunting season. :-\

The other is I think there are more deer in DMZ 4O than the DEC knows about. Last Saturday, I counted over 30 deer grazing in the open fields between my neighbors house and mine which is only 1/2 mile in distance. Over the last few years, it is very hard to get a DMP unless you are a land owner or a resident with pref. points.

Maybe not too many people hunting anymore also?
