Glad you figured this out,

Also at times they use a water based lubricant when they snake wires through conduit. I've seen that drip out of the conduit

I'd much rather have a dead critter in the crawl space/basement/wall etc than that fried component. 

The critter ain't gonna burn the joint down!!

Water getting into the panel through the main line.

First quote 1600 to switch out the whole service, hardwire a combo co/smoke detector in the basement(needed for code) and install a time delay box on the AC unit

I'm glad you found that safely! My AC unit won't come on . The Google says to reset the breaker and wait half an hour

Look for a quick start switch on the unit itself...mine was engaged which ment dead capacitor since the compressor was not turning on.

HaHaHa........Every now and then my Mrs. will pull something out of the hat and do that strut too. I just smile and say nice job hon.
