Water Rat
Checked my traps the other day on one of the coldest days of the year. When I walked up to him he started flipping out. First he started growling and jumping around biting everything in sight. Even the hair on his back was up. I never caught a coyote by the back foot before which was kind of surprising , especially since I had a few guide sticks around the pan. The best thing about this cold weather is that you will rarely catch any non target animals like coons , opossums and skunks.
turkeyfeathers
Nice catch. I’ve heard other coyotes will nip and bite at hind quarters of a caught comrade. Not sure if true or not. Cut any other tracks from others ?
Water Rat
Found a few fresh tracks this morning.

If you spent the night out in those temps. you would be flipping out too. Congratulations on the catch. I have never caught one by the hind foot. Judging from the catch circle he sure tried to get out an am surprised he didn't. Is that by chance a 550 holding him? hats off for sticking it out this time of year. Definitely the hardest time of year to trap.
Water Rat
Yes it's a MB 550.....that's pretty observant of you. I just bought them over the summer. They are a very impressive trap.

Water Rat
Any other trap and I might have had a pull out. With the 550 he wasn't going anywhere. His 3 toes were broken from the trap.

I have had them pull the stakes and trap more than once. I will have to put some of them on my list of things to get for sure even though they are pricey
