Funny Benoit Pic

Recommended Posts

The Benoits are definitely larger than life... I know them as well as many other well known trackers... except for maybe Joe Dinito from NY... the Benoits are probably some the best whitetail trackers in the world.. the reason I say Joe Dinito is better is because.. the benoits hunt nearly every day during the deer season.. where as Joe only gets to hunt 3-5 days a year...and he has been successful in the deep woods Adirondacks every year but 1 for the last 18 years.. not sure many other fellas... would have that kind of record with that little time to hunt.

When a guy (or a family) is making money off of his "hobby", beware.  More than a couple "big" names have fallen to the pressure to succeed in a "hobby".  Kurt Darner and  Noel Feather would be a couple that I can think of PDQ.

The Benoit family sure gets plenty of good press but I get a bit nervous when people like them start to pimp their "methods" to make a buck.

As always, YMMV.

Everything they do .. they do on a shoestring... they book their own shows, make their own videos and publish their own books... they are simple guys that live regular lives like you and me... they also work 40 hour a weeks at regular jobs. I believe Shane works for the town DPW. You also have to remember they are not looking to get famous.. they were well known before they started doing any promotion... they reluctantly started marketing themselves on the request of other hunters, friends and family.

I've seen these guys in action up north of Pittsburg, NH a few year ago.  Very down to earth guys who do their homework.  They were about 20 miles off the blacktop looking for a buck they had located the year before.  They figured with a year to grow he might be big enough to go after.  They are good hunters who earned their reputation.

They are old school woodsmen, the likes of which are seldom seen. Many of the newer generations of hunters cant understand the knowledge and time, mind set and way of life that they live daily. Without the immediate gratification of modern conveniences and distractions, most young hunters or indifferent hunters do not believe in the success and tactics still practiced by them.

I'm reading the book that started it all right now, How to kill the biggest buck of your life. Actually its the 3rd time ive read it, I forget things easily so I decided to read it again. Larry said he watched his dad kill a 16 point 350 lbs buck in vermont back when he was a kid and thats what started it all for him. He was hooked on monster whitetails after that and the rest is history.

Great book. The family has a long history in the Maine woods well before then, too. Another great book is "Hunting Big Woods Bucks, by ....Blood (last name), another north woods guide. I wish Ihad the time to put all those books teach into practice.

One thing to remember about the Benoits- I'm pretty sure they usually hunt together, or atleast the same area, so the knowledge gained makes them all better hunters.. Hunting in remote locations also may make them the first humans some of those deer have ever seen.. I do give them alot of respect, they maintain regular jobs, and haven't chosen to go the 'TV show' route as many others do..
