My hearing is very poor....I could never hear a bird drum unless he was very close and I was looking right at him..

I have however,  hunted with guys who could hear them drumming at 75-100yards...

A grouse drums by flapping it's wings, a tom does it by producing a gutteral sound. Most of the time they make a "spit" sound before drumming.

Pit-- Brooommmmm.  I have heard 1 of my Jakes Spit + Drum 2 feet away from me . Cool sound!        The 1st time, I heard this sound in 1990, I thought it was machinery in the distance. I didn't know a Gobbler was super close.  Again-- no Mentor.
