That Worked.... Just A Little Late!

I visited a local whitetail farm yesterday that collects deer urine daily, North Country Products in Lyons owned by John Bacon. After talking with John a bit, I bought some Peak of Estrus scent. I asked John how fresh it was and he said that it was collected less than 24 hours ago! John showed me some of his deer, including one monsterous buck!

I went out yesterday afternoon and dragged a scent trail along the edge of a thicket to one of my stands. I sat for 4 hours before dark, but never saw a deer. I tried to remain optimistic about the scent and thought, if the deer aren't moving, and the wind isn't blowing into the thicket to carry the scent, they just aren't smelling it to follow it in.

I went in this morning and checked a trailcam that I had set up overlooking the edge of the thicket, where I laid the scenttrail the evening before. I got pics of this new 8pt, pacing back and forth, nose to the ground, a few hours later searching for that "doe"!

Granted, I am not singing the praises of these scents just yet, but I will say that this is more positive reaction than I've gotten out of any other scents that I've tried so far.

He said that he distributes to ~40 shops. If you're interested, his # is 315-946-4976.

Someone the other day posted the deerchannel.com site so I've been watching all the video clips and Dr Deer (Kroll) has done experiments with scents. He used the leading commercial doe in heat urine, buck lure, human urine, and new car scent. He said that the bucks visited the human urine and new car scent just as many times as the buck lure and doe urine. He then boldly stated that sex scents and attractants do NOT work. It's a gimmick.

I'm no expert but think there must be a HUGE difference between Some fresh collected urine and the commercial bottled stuff

Not according to this Dr. Kroll guy. He said that doe vaginal mucus scent has a half life of about 45 seconds. So for a buck to smell it he would have to be right on her. He also talked about how a buck tracks a doe has nothing to do with estrus or estrous scent. They are actually tracking a specific doe from the scent off of their interdigital glands. The buck already knows that a doe is ready to breed from her visual behavior. He then tracks that doe using her scent from the interdigital glands. When the buck is within contact range he then will sniff around her vulva area which will ultimately tell him that she is ready to breed.

Well thats some of the dumbest things i have heard yet.If that was the case and the bucks came charging in to any scent then they would be coming in to any scent they smell in the woods. Your beer, your limburger chese sandwhich or your aqua velva! He can say what he will but coming from someone that has had watched deer in close range for many years,Scents work alot, The gland i agree with and i think a whitetail might check out a certin scent laid out in the woods but the question is,,,,Do they have a positive reaction to it???? Try laying a scent trail of new car scent the next time you go in and then try a true doe in estrus or better yet pure heat scent and see which way the bucks go when they hit each of those scent trails!!!

Dr. Kroll has lost a lot of stock in the deer hunting community, the way he pimps his Buck Forage Oats.

So he doesn't believe that you can lay a scent trail of deer urine and have a buck follow it in then huh? Wow, then he needs to tell the millions of guys that do it successfully every year!

To each their own.

i have used john's stuff for yrs.never any success.alot of variables involved, wind, your scent(or lack of),hot does, had some dinks follow drag lines but never any booners,i think they do work ,all the cards just have to fall into place, late season may be better when they are looking for the last few does to breed.he has some good product, hope it works for you, tricking that big boy is very rewarding!

The half life of vaginal mucous is not important. So what if it's functionality deteriorates that fast, it still will emit a smell that bucks would learn to or instinctively recognize beyond those 45 seconds. A short half life does not mean the odor will also be short lived. Too much research and observation supports that bucks rely heavily on scent to find does in heat. I am still rather young and have witnessed a good number of bucks passing through, nose to the ground, shortly after a doe passed through. I do not use scents often, but definitely can see them as being beneficial.

I just got an order delivered from Kishel's Scents based in East Aurora NY. I got a bottle of Buck urine and a bottle of Doe in Estrus urine. I heard that he had some quality scents. I've never been too lucky with using scents ( Buck Bombs and good ole' Tinks 69) but I figured I give it a try this year with his scents. I will say that the products definitely look like urine where as Tinks has a dark color to it. Just throwing it out there if anyone has used his products with any success?

Actually a doe produces certain phermones only during the estrus cycle which are picked up by the buck and triggers his breeding instincts... her body language only tells him the specific moment that she will allow him to mount her... a buck can track any deer by their interdigital gland and will track any doe with his instinct (based on higher hormone levels or testosterone in the buck at this time of year) telling him that it is breeding season. most does will come into estrus around that same time so his chances of finding a receptive doe are pretty good. Freezing doe scents during this time will increase the shelf life of the estrus scent which definitely has a short shelf life but lasts longer than 45 seconds.
