Monitering your herd

Hey guys, with the season drawing to an end in just a month =(=(=(, I really want to get an inventory of the bucks that are on my farms that I never got a look at after the seasons over. I know in New York we are not allowed to use supplemental feeds but I have access to an old manual corn shucker that works excellent. If I shuck corn out of fields that deer could have naturally eaten anyways and put it out to get deer on camera, and help them during this rough winter we're looking to have, will I be in trouble with the law?

Illegal, period. Adding apples under an apple tree, Illegal. If it grows, and stays where it is, its legal. If you pick it from elsewhere and put it there, Illegal. Mineral and salt substances are also illegal. C'mere Deer, Illegal. Get over it, stop being lazy and use real scouting tactics to position your cams.

#wnybuck, I understand how that may sound lazy but the way i see it getting deer on camera isn't the problem i can do that, but to attract a mtitude of deer to one location, greatly increases ur odds to see what bucks made it, it would also provide a little snack in the mean time without completely disrupting there instinctual feeding partterns during the winter, but yes it is illegal and I do not take offense to anyone with strong feelings it's understandable. I'm 110% fair chase, this is just an exciting idea to really get some good pics of big ny bucks which is never very easy like it is in the Midwest where they crawl with big deer :(

WHen the snow is deep the trails leading to the cornfields are great spots for cams. But bucks will die over winter anywhy even if the made it thru gun. you wnat a good estimate get those cams out in the spring may and june!! yes they just start growing but you can tell a good buck pretty easily by june.

I hear ya. Gman has some good advice there. If you put cams on travel routes to and from food sources, youre gonna get most of the deer on cam. One thing you can do to legally attract deer is to top some trees and leave the tops laying in a small area. They will feed on the more tender, smaller branches.

Good luck and make sure to post up some of those trail cam photos in the trail cam section!

There are laws and then there are stupid laws (I say if it is a native food to the area what difference does it make if the apples are from the tree on the other side of the land or the salt lick is for the cows and the deer are licking it. The corn is still from the same place if its on the cob standing or picked and laying on the ground ) the government has ran the people over with STUPID LAWS I can see not putting some things out but come on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to get back to the way life should be .

By using that line of thinking, you should be able to bush hog a field of corn and then rake it all into a pile 50 yards from your stand? How is that any different from bringing in a truck load of corn and piling it 50 yards from your stand just because theres a corn field a mile down the road? Just because I have 4 apple trees near my stand, I should be able to keep replenishing the apples on the ground under them through the whole winter, just because they were there early in the fall? Maybe I should be able to put a 100lb salt block in front of my stand just because the farmer up the road has one for his cows? All of that is just baiting. Where do you draw the line once you legalize it? No feeders? No store bought products? Yeah right, they have a hard enough time enforcing the current law of no baiting as it is. If you want to be able to bait, then call your reps, send in letters, etc and try to get it legalized.

WNY, I am not lazy, as I stated I do not use attract. scents of any kind! I do not use any baits of any kind . I do my scouting I set a few stands for bow season & my favorite way to hunt is to still hunt & stalking! I am 62 yrs.old have hunted 48yrs & have taken 130 plus deer 5 of which are in the 140'S & still drag most of them myself which is also the way I prefer to hunt. I'll give you a little tip "Its what you learn after you know it all that counts!" Have a nice day!!

I never called you lazy. I said that your idea of adding apples under apple trees after all of the naturally growing ones were gone is illegal. I said that baiters are lazy, which is my opinion, so if you dont do it, what are you getting so uppity about?

Ive never claimed to know everything, but youd better bet your ass I know what the laws are concerning something before I do it.

BTW, sounds to me like you should take your own advice.
