Chances are it is a buck it's the speed of the animals hormones that tend to cause Buck droppings to clump more.

What they are eating also determines if the drop more pellets or clumps.

In a heavily wooded area the pellets are more likely to be loose if grazing .

This can also tell you food sources. If you're seeing lots of this in woods could be a leafy food source you need to find.
