  1. Congratulations! I'll never forget asking my father in law. It was awkward... I went to their house for dinner, without my wife. We ate dinner while watching a Cardinals game, all the while her mom was about to explode. She finally said "Do you have something to ask John?" I said "I think you know." I'll never forget what he told me "You're a good guy with your head on straight, I'm happy for you guys." One of the best and most memorable dinners of my life. No need to scare the guy if you like him. My relationship with my father in law essentially started at that point, even though I'd been dating her for 5 years. He's a quiet guy, but that sentence said volumes.
  2. My rule of thumb is for friends and family like you is "do not engage".
  3. I can echo every one of these points. I know was just beat to death with political ads that didn't connect to me, mainly because I liked something that halfway related. It would also show me all of the political crap that my friends and family would share because I had either liked or commented on things. I can see how people become influenced, and I'm sure Im guilty of it as well. As far as use goes, my wife and I moved to NYS from Illinois, and are 1000 miles away from our closest family. Now that we have a 1 year old daughter, being able to share photos and videos, and especially being able to video chat with Grandma and Grandpa is invaluable.
  4. We can't say that's "it's a generational thing" anymore either. We've all seen 2 year olds and 70 year olds with their face buried in their phones or tablets. It's easy to place it as a character flaw as well, but it truly is an addiction.
  5. About 2 months ago I decided that I was going to take control of my Facebook experience. Now, I'm not an avid user of social media, I really only use Facebook, and only check it a couple of times a day. However, I really became focused on how much of my Social Media experience wasn't "social". Between advertising, political crap, and brand messaging, I realized that most of what I was seeing had nothing to do with my social groups. So, I unliked every brand, product, celebrity, interest, and political figure. I removed myself from groups that weren't local and personal (or work related, friend or community groups) and I quit interacting with anything that wasn't a personal post from friends (political cartoons, images and messages that people shared from other pages, etc). What I found is something that we all already know, but few of us actually notice. Facebook is nothing but noise, with a little of what you actually care about mixed in. I have found that I now care less about politics, and more about what is happening with my friends and family. I "want" less, because I'm not bombarded by ads, and believe it or not, your news feed has an end! That's right, I no longer scroll and scroll and scroll. I see about 25-30 posts, and then "no new items in your news feed". So, I would challenge anyone to give it a try, go on a purge of your "likes" and groups. See what it does to your experience. I have had an account since 2006, so there was a lot of "likes" from 15 years ago that 21 year old me thought was awesome, but 35 year old me could care less about. However, those things were still shaping what I was exposing myself to. If you are one of those folks who have avoided the scourge of Social Media, keep it up, you are an inspiration!
  6. Picked the bow up on Saturday, and had a chance to shoot a little bit over the weekend. So far, I'm really liking it. I've got some "dialing-in" to do, but I'm looking forward to some warmer days to shoot!
  7. You've got enough there for a small knife handle
  8. For Whom the Bell Tolls is absolutely one of my favorites. It's been a few years since I last read it, it may have to be up next.
  9. I'm quite an avid reader, and I was curious what everyone around here is reading. Outside of Outdoor Life and Field and Stream, I like to read a lot of Fantasy (Game of Thrones), Stephen King, I'm a huge fan of the James Bond books, and Ernest Hemingway. Right now I'm reading "Nottingham" by Nathan Makaryk, which a great adult retelling of the Robin Hood story. Anyways, what are you reading?
  10. Wonder if this stuff would keep a motorcycle helmet visor from fogging up...
  11. It was a beautiful day. Took my daughter for a walk and got to shoot my bow for a little bit.
  12. I get it, I got this one because I had another just like it (in sunburst) a few years ago and thought it would be nice to have a jumbo again. Lo and behold, this one sat on a stand just like the other one did. I'm glad it found a new home, and I'm bringing home a new to me Bowtech Allegiance tomorrow with a little money left in my pocket
  13. I love Western knives, and they are very overlooked when collecting. They are well made, good-looking knives. I've got 4-5 of them hanging around.
  14. For my EDC, I have my little Swiss Army Mini Champ as my multi-tool, and a Case Canoe for when I need a bigger blade (plus I'm a fidgeter and the bone on the canoe has a nice feel to it). For an outdoor knife, I'll usually carry my SA Huntsman. (Photos are reference, except the Canoe which is mine).
  15. With the push for diversity in film, the next actor might be
  16. So yesterday I posted that I was looking at getting a Mathews Switchback. In a turn of events, I've landed a good deal on a 2007 Bowtech Allegiance. I remember shooting a new Bowtech Guardian probably around 07-08 and remember liking that bow, but I haven't shot the Allegiance. Does anyone have experience with these bows? (Photo for reference)
  17. Thanks for the advice everyone. Funny turn of events, but I'm actually going to pick up an old Bowtech Allegiance on Saturday, 29 1/2" draw with a loop. Should be close, but I'll take it to my local guy who is a Bowtech dealer and have him help me set it up.
  18. I saw that yesterday. Impressive score, but man, what an ugly rack
  19. I think you're right, when you think about it, the arrow is not being drawn any further by adding a string loop, you're just changing the anchor. I guess my concern is just getting the best form I can with what I have.
