  1. I hunt alot of different land. I bet I climb in a pre hung treestand 3 times all season. Otherwise this is how I make it work. 1. Summit viper if i know the trees will take it. Straight and branchless. 2. Lone wolf stand and sticks in tough tree spots 3. The ghillie suit and some good wind. You can be on the ground and they can't see you. I find in most of my time in the woods Its really hard to keep bucks relaxed with alot of human traffic and scent. I like minimal impact and really only go in the woods for sheds in March and to kill deer from October til feb. We Set cameras on roads and check em on rainy days. We have however set a shoothouse in October and killed a giant buck in November from it. it snows in June once in a while, I wouldnt break out snow suits, but anything can happen.
  2. I'm fortunate enough to have a decent group of fowlers and I would guess we are scouting 100 miles in every direction, everyones looking for the x and keeping tabs on the roosts. We set up on anything and sometimes that means you have to get creative. Just try to your best mimick what you see, where you see it. The X is the key. This is three days before season.... the bottom picture is opener. Things change all the time. We went from 300 birds to 6 birds in three days.
  3. I wish i could say that. I shoot so much even out to 50yds.... i still have had crazy things happen under 25yds, lost deer or completely missed. Once even shot through a pretty nice set of antlers only to hear the arrow bouncing off the hard tines. I scored a nice buck last year, and that happened so fast i barely remember the 18yd shot. I believe It was confidence in my setup and the repetition of my practice that made it go down second nature. Shoot, scout, shoot, scout, shoot scout.
  4. Whats everyone doing in region 7, anyone out there spending time in the woods or on the water?
  5. Onus seems great. For me I like huntstand, it seems pretty user friendly
  6. Gregs archery in moravia has 30 targets in decent shape. 10$ anytime you want to shoot. Made me feel more confident. I still only shoot 30-35yds
  7. Yup. They trying to darken up those armpits and under the chin
  8. For deer, they dont like human smell. My best hunts happen when I haven't been in my stand for weeks.... or even months. I dont run cams in the blocks just by the roads and food sources. Deer smell your presence for a month. Check your cams in a down poor. You will never trick a bucks nose. Olfactory for miles. I scout everything, deer never forget when they come in contact with people. I think Penn state did alot of research regarding yearly movement and human pressure is the biggest factor in thier movement.
  9. Seems like they will fly and feed til ten then after five til dark. Set up on a roost you can shoot late in this season.
  10. Humted 7r 7s and 7h. That was 7h between daylight and 10 am. Hunted 3 setups in 3 counties and scouted in the process. I think your doing good if you hear honks during this early part of the season especially when its this warm. Swamps quarrys and ponds then to corn wheat and alfalfa. We try to start the day on the x and work the day based on what we see.
  11. Hows the first weekend? Still slow here. Few locals around.
  12. Yeah I fast.... between meals!
  13. Well its a long story. After you have kids, calling your buddies a$$h@/3s in front of them is a bad habit i did my best to end asap. I slipped up and squeaked out the word butthole at deer camp narrowly avoiding dropping the a-bomb........ some things stick.
  14. This was a gift from my best . Sharpens easy holds a decent edge. Field dressed a couple dozen
  15. Those are actually really delicious!!!
  16. I didnt have any problems getting my tags and stamp.... not sure when I'll recieve my hip number cause it comes in the mail. I talked to my man in green, he made it sound like its gon a be a pain for the officers at least during early goose.

    Acorns

When you guys are checking your cams twice a month has anyone seen acorns yet, and if so good year for red or white oak nuts? I have seen the the deer less frequently in the beans as they turn yellow. I dont want to go in my areas and I'm sure cny is all relatively close to same times and types of feeding.
  18. It is very hard to kill a bear in nys. No baiting means the bears can be anywhere. They are nomadic and dont have a home territory. It is a very beautiful place, and very wild. The catskills are real mountains. You will be in nature. Some of the best hunters I have ever had the pleasure to hunt with go to catskills every year.... they have been going for 7 or 8 years, usually at least 4 guys and have never killed a bear unless it was trying to get into someone's dumpster. If you look at the county numbers, the counties that kill the most bears is still only a couple dozen bears for hundreds of square miles. Go for the experience. Go forage for wild food. Do some fishing. Enjoy the thin clean air. Get comfortable with going for years and not connecting. When and if the moment happens you will never forget it. North Maine woods is the spot. Otherwise I stack up a pile of geese this month for the freezer.
