In that type of terrain, I’ve had more consistent success finding bucks bedding on points or along hillsides, that border large ravines. It’s best If there’s a steady water source in the ravine If you’re going in the summer, I would throw a couple camera out in likely areas, then check them on your first day during the season. That should show you where your best odds will be to concentrate on.

Numbers are nothing like they were in in late 90’s early 2000’s . The bobcat population is exploding in the southeast parts of the state., to the point where I think it’s probably having an effect also, they’re susceptible to some virus that effects the liver. Lpdv.. not sure what that does, but I agree that there’s a decline, but still overall decent numbers

This past bow season I connected on a good buck in early bow season. When my buddy came with me to help drag him out, I spent some time looking for the arrow. All I found was a balloon. my friend, laughed then told me about the theory. Interesting idea. so later looking at my trail cam pics, It captured the exact moment I hit the buck and the balloon in the same image.

this is spot on. If willing to put the time in off season, early season is a good bet. Bucks Have a small range before November and More importantly, they haven’t been pressured. Hitting the weather fronts, near food sourceHas worked for me

I’ve already aged it by tooth wear, and have had someone more experienced do it also. Tooth wear isn’t generally known to be as exact as cementum though, especially once you’re up over the 6.5 y/o range. If anything, sending the the teeth out, will allow a great opportunity to compare the 2 aging techniques

Back in the 90’s early 2000’s there were tons of birds in Putnam and have taken a few. There’s still birds around, but in pockets.. definitely have to scout them out , if plan on sticking to public.

Took this buck with the bow, a couple days ago. I’ll probably send a tooth out for exact aging, but judging by tooth wear, he’s 7.5 years old or older.

I look for horns, while scouting and hunting. Good way to get excercise and learn the woods for sure

Bottom of little ravines and bowls. or anywhere water would collect, Is where I found the most. In mountains look for drainage areas , but yes seems like mostly red oaks.

I’ve scouted areas of 3N , 3M and 3J. Seems like they’re very spotty, in all the areas I’ve checked, mostly reds. when you find them, the deer are hitting them hard. I don’t see enough on the ground to last them the winter, though

I try to, but not always. Sometimes depends on where I’m hunting and the wind situation.

I haven’t rattled that much, but it does work. I’ve rattled a few in with real antlers and managed to kill a really nice 6 point. My buddy last year in Ohio killed a nice ten point , using the black rack, rattling system. I bought it and it sounds pretty decent. And they pack easier than real horns.

unless you’re high up, the Only thing that’s predictable in mountains and hills, is thermals. A lot of places you can set a clock to when they kick in, practically down to the minute. What’s worked for me in the past, is stay out and away from your stand until the switch happens, then Quietly move into it. Having good access, is key, because a lot of times the deer are on their feet already and if you’re in the right spot, nearby. I’ve notice around my area, this time of year, the evening thermals start pulling down hill around 5:30 pm, so It makes for quick hunt.
