Point of fact: NYC police have to qualify with their firearm every 6 months. Shooting paper accurately, however, is not the same as shooting a person who happens to be firing back at you. James Bond-like skills don't really translate to the real world. I know everyone thinks they are a special forces caliber marksman while under the pressure of a life and death situation, but the reality is, you aren't. Unless of course you are a highly trained combat veteran. In that case, I applaud your skill and thank you for your service.

Not at all. I simply meant if there is a crowd of people behind your target, they are going to have bullets coming their way. And that isn't fun, imho.

Yeah, I'm sure if the shooter had been trying to kill multiple people, it would have been far worse. It would be hard to fire a weapon in that area of the city and *not* hit someone. I fear that point is going to be proven when they start doing the forensics on who actually shot who.

Well, since you can't actually walk into any sort of store in NYC and walk out with a handgun.... The poster I was addressing stated that trained law enforcement officers were terrible shots. I was just pointing out that if people who are professionally trained in firearms can be that bad, what about people who have access to guns without any training at all? I apologize for not clarifying my point.

Yes, but this thread is based on the incident that happened in NYC this morning and NYC's restrictive gun laws. You can't now just magically pretend we aren't talking about the city when it suits you.

If I happen to be behind the person that just drew down on you on a crowded street, me and the 10 people next to me hope you aren't. Its that simple too. Side note, do people draw guns on you often? Remind me not to ever visit Rush, NY.

Correct. However, if the police commissioner is already putting it out there that some of the casualties may be from police bullets, he has to have good inclination that its going to play out that way.

The guy killed his one intended victim. He then fled a block or so where he was confronted by cops who were on the scene practically instantly. He then drew his weapon again and tried to shoot the police. They returned fire and killed him. It was in this exchange that the rest of the people were wounded. And these are trained officers of the law. Yeah, more people with guns on crowded streets is the answer. Srsly.

Funny that you mention this. An unarmed elevator worker from the building is currently being acknowledged for both, running the shooter off, and directing cops to him.

Honestly, for the people saying (I'm paraphrasing) "too bad there weren't more armed people firing guns on the crowded streets of NYC", have you ever been there? When the police respond a minute or so later and they see multiple people with guns blasting away, how are they supposed to be able to tell the "good guys" from the "bad guys". More guns is not the answer to every questions asked. I'll sit back and get flamed now until Virgil posts something new for you to focus on. EDIT: Lol, Virgil posted while I was typing my response. =D

How many hours till Bloomberg's press conference? This one is going to hurt. I used to work just a few blocks away, but I'm downtown now. I just hope the other (up to 9 reported now) wounded people are OK.

An M-14 is a home defense gun? A gun who's rounds punch through walls like they were made of butter and can easily continue traveling another quarter mile and pass through your neighbor's house? And for the most part, who is wearing body armor (the big selling point) in NYS? Its not the the burgler trying to steal your TV, that's for sure. Everyone I know who owns or wears body armor is in LE.

Am I the only person who finds this disturbing? This is the attitude that "anti's" use as their battle cry for stricter laws. You realize you are discussing which gun / round combo kills people better?

I've recovered since then, but in 2009 I (and 4000+ other people nation wide) were laid off by IBM. The next month they reported record profits for the quarter. Nice. And I know a number of people who worked in finance / Wall Street that still haven't found jobs that pay even 50% of what they use to make. -

I'm just saying, gun dealers have the most to gain by giving people the impression that soon they may not be able to purchase X and Y anymore. I would suggest taking everything with a grain of salt until after the elections when the legislature goes back to work and can actually do something.

I guess my sarcasm was a little too subtle. And to Dom, most bolt-action deer rifles fire a much more powerful round than the average AR-style. Its just the fact that they are semi-auto and availability of large, after-market, magazines that people have a problem with. Personally, I agree with the latter part of that.
