  1. If only it was that simple and the tax dollars that it would take would be astonomical compared to releases pheasants. NY just doesnt have the land for pheasants any longer. Farms are going fast, big fields of crp like in south dakota is a must. Can you imagine how many deer hunters would be complaining about there state forest being leveled to start habitat restructuring for pheasant. This is one of those topics that there is no answer for that isnt going to make someone mad with the efforts the state puts forth to seperate bird hunting from big game hunting. Then you say few pheasant hunters, you should go take a drive over to the pheasant release site in Lysander/baldwansville on the weekends. Theres more pheasants hunters there than you can even imagine at times. Orange vest and dogs everywhere lol. As far as raising your own birds anyone can do it. You order young chicks in the spring and raise them in a fenced in pen on your property and release them at a certain age, but it leads to some problems, habtat, predators, will they adapt to being fed versus feeding themselves, and costs. You can order adult birds for a fee from a game farm and they will release them for you or you can release them yourself but be prepared to pay some huge money to do that too. Now the state has a program where you can sign up and they will give you birds to raise and release for free but you have to open the land up for the public to pheasant hunt it. Pheasant hunting has a long heritage in this state and there are many more people who are in the field hunting them than you might think, to take a heritage away just because someone doesnt like it can go both ways and we as hunters need to respect each other and ban together not nit pick what we like personally versus what others like. Turkey habitat is prime in NY now and hence the reason it has worked so well in the age of the forest the state is in now. I posted earlier that turkey habitat and grouse habitat is opposite of each other. How many turkey you see roosted in a small brushy saplings that can barely support its own weight. Put and take is the way it is for alot of outdoor hunting and fishing activities without put and take the amount of money that is gained from hunters and fisherman who partake in such activities helps your favorite hunting priviledges as well. Im willing to bet we sportsmen spend more tax money on these programs than they put into making them happen.
  2. There are a few ways that have been posted on here. What works the best for me and is working right now is I take the plastic banding material that is used to band up pallets and put it around the perimeter of the foodplot. Then I spray deer away on a rag as I go and wipe it on the plastic banding material. It lasts for about a month where I can either do it again or take it down. It takes about a week after its down for the deer to start using the foodplot. My brother has done the same thing but used bailing twine instead with good results. Others on here have said they hang rope around the perimeter and hang chunks of irish spring off it. You can also google foodplot saver and it a bit pricy but I have used that as well and it works great. Thing is its identical to what I first described and that is much less expensive for me as I have boxes of plastic banding material at the warehouse for shipping skids. I might add that the turkey dont give a rats but and will use the plots if its to their liking.
  3. Oswego speedway had 2 skunks running around in the pits this summer. Both were freaking out and one hid under a racecar right were the the guy sits. A pit crew guy got a car cover and held it above his head and walked up to the first skunk and dropped it over the skunk. PIcked it up in the blanket and walked it outside the gates and let it go. He did the same thing to the second one after they encouraged it out from under the car. It was quite entertaining watching all the women in the pits run like hell for cover. lol I would think that the skunk could get the cup of his muzzle as long as he could breath in it. If they can dig through garbage and other crap for food it seems he could work the cup off with his paws sooner or later.
  4. It was the best thing I ever did and yet the worst thing I ever did lol. Discipline is tough. I have actually set myself up fairly good. I need to be working 1 week a month to service a few particular accounts. Once those are done I schedule work to fill the gaps between those accounts. The problem is I work hard for my service business and my maple business and all the stuff that needs to be done for a country home owner. When Im not working I feel really guilty about it and have a hard time relaxing and am constantly thinking I shoud be turning wrenches or cutting more firewood or hanging more tubing something. This year Im hunting atleast 15 full days a month from opening northern tier to the close of souther tier and Im going to feel guilty about it every second. And to think I am actually in the process of yet another business adventure to diversify finacials for my future. Trust me no one wants to work for me Burmjohn. Im a one of those guys that it has to be done my way. I really dont know where I got that from or why I am. Tried hard to not be like that but it just overtakes my mind. Employees work represent me and my business and when they mess up or show the potential to mess up I have to shove them aside and do it myself. I have told a few guys that if you can take critisism and can handle getting pushed to the side while I do it for you, you wil have an easy job and little work to do as I do it for you lol. Back on topic. The leaves have really started to change here at home, the nights are cooler, days are shorter, salmon are coming up the river to spawn, and that smell of the first whiffs of fall are all like seeing a naked lady for the first time in your life and not knowing what to do with yourself is the only way I can describe the feeling of the fall hunting season around that corner.
  5. I think deodorant would be cheaper. Funny this came up 2 seasons ago at camp we all had our shoes we wear every day and we decided to have a scent spray testing. I think we had about 4 different brands among us. With enough spray they all did the job but we all had the fall blend smelling ones and there was a noticable difference in the particular fall smell. To me not a single one of them actaully smelled like dirt or leaves even just smelling out of the bottle. Since then I use a spray with no "cover" scent in it like fall or acorn or pine, they all smell so different.
  6. Let me guess the town claims it is there land right? If so that seems to have a common theme with the little parcels of forever wild land that Rosevelt left to the people of the state. Finding any information on the land is going to take more leg work than googling it on the internet. A trip to public records office would be needed if they are not lost and forgotten and just maybe on purpose. I could tell you a story of my hometown and land they posted and claimed as the towns land that was indeed deemed forever wild but not going into details on the internet about that one or how it turned out.
  7. They sure will but due to the expense to reach substantial numbers I dont believe it has been done on a modest scale. Baby grouse feed on nothing but bugs and grubs if Im not mistaken and alot of them. I read somewhere that the expense comes from trying to maintain the feeding habits of the young birds. I did alot of research before I knew any better because I wanted to raise some grouse for my property that once held numerous birds. Cant do it, illegal in NY. It illegal to even have one in captivity. From what I understood is that there are so many non native species of grouse the fear was an introduction of a non native species into the area. The time will come if the trend stays the way it is the will be a grouse raising and release program oh wait maybe not the state funds got cut drastically for the pheasantsn no money no birds.
  8. Go to work? During Hunting season? Whats wrong with you people? When your the boss and owner you get to take the hunting season off well unless its raining out. lol
  9. I have the same sight with .019 pins. Do yourself a huge favor. Go get a package of spare fiber opics and keep them in your pack. I am constantly having to mess with them as they are brittle and just break. Oh and a bic lighter to melt the ends again. I love the sight hate the thin fiber. I bet you every 3 times I go out one is broken. I have replaced them with different fiber optics from different manufactures and it doesnt matter. It weird they break in no particular spot at no particular time. It could be in my bow case and open it up and ones broke.
  10. I got you guys figured out pretty good I think. You start out with this run down looking camp that you bring the wives to just once and the next time you ask them along they are like no thanks Im not sleeping in that place ever again. Then once you hear those magic words you guys push those things in a nearby lake and take the camoflauged tarp off the real camp. Well played mansion hunters well played.
  11. I thought I was before I checke on one of my stands and found the ladder in the bottom of a swaphole. Sure love trespassers. So I went fishing for my ladder and moved the stand to a spot I wanted one anyways. Then moved it to another tree and then moved it to another one after that. Wish I could make up my mind before I did all that. Now Im good to go as that was the last on the list. Just stabbing the 3d with more arrows for practice and fun waiting till the 1st

    From Road

Well since the woods arent growing in the road you should be good lol.
  13. Looks like you should give us the advise. Nice looking foodplot.
  14. Lifetime backtag made out of metal stamped and painted by NY convicts like a license plate on a car. LOL
  15. If your easily grossed out and dont want to be offended dont read any further lol. I once worked with a lady that every year consitantly put down good bucks. I would ask her all the time what are you doing so special, she would blush and walk away. FInally one day her usband picked her up from work and I caught him in the parking lot and asked him what she does to get a good buck every year. You ready for the gross part.................. she saved her tampons and froze them all year and hung them from trees around her stand. I confronted her thinking it was a joke on her husbands part, well it wasnt. Now I dont use goat urine or tampons but I too use to buy every dang different scent on the market and after a dozen years I stopped. I dont know if the hunting got better or the scents I used were a little to be desired by a deers standards but I swear after focusing more on scent control than cover scents or attracting scents I see more deer. It wasnt until 2 years ago I started using one brand of deer scents and had good success for once with them. Northwoods, cant find it in any store that I am aware of I order it from them direct. I was skeptical at first but after wacthing a few bucks walk of their beaten path to pick up the scent of the scent trail I put down to stop under a licking branch with a mock scrape in it with nothing but Northwoods scents I was convinced for the first time that the right scent at the right time works. Now if I can just get one of those decent bucks not to duck my arrow I will be set. LOL
  16. I have one stand in particular that is setup a little to close to a bedding area but it produces for me when I follow a couple simple rules. If in the bow season I play the weather and hunt it when the winds are right and there is a predicted rain soon after. I watch the radar before I go out to that stand when rains are predicted. I want to leave little sent behind and hope the rain helps wash that away or dilute it. Rest of my stands based on wind direction time of day feeding habits rutting activity and of course the stand that go in with me and come out with me puts me anywhere I want if the others dont feel right.
  17. This is the first year we havent had a bear sighting. I even had one on my trail camera a few years back and Im on the Salmon River.
  18. And sadly I think there will come a time when the grouse are starting to be released like the pheasants. The numbers are nothing like the days of the old when I was a kid. The rainy wet springs and predation and lack of young forest are not good. I was told a log time ago the higher the turkey population the lower the grouse population and vice versa. It was referenced as to the age class of the woods that each bird prefers.
  19. It is very rare for me to get some bucks on camera in the summer. Always does and fawns, its not until late september or october before they start showin up on my cameras.. It has always made me wonder if the guys with all the buck pics in the summer have the opposite effect. Do the bucks ont he cameras start to disappear as they move out of the bachelor groups and into other areas?
  20. If you are going to smoke your ham with real maple syrup make sure you dont put it ove the ham till the last couple hours of smoking, it will burn. Man Im hungry now.
  21. Not quite sure he was pointing a finger at you landtracedeerhunter. It truly is a great program, to get afield with your dog and family to enjoy some hunting over the dogs is a great time. If there was no pheasant release program there would be no pheasant hunting in NY. And like Doewhacker pointed out it is the way alot of things are in this state and heck this country. Trout stocking, heck there would be no salmon in lake ontario or any tributaries to name a couple. The problem is I think it affects ejp's bowhunting and he has taken a bad taste to it. Cant blame him his hunting area is disturbed but that doesnt make it right to want the whole program to disapear because it upsets one guy.
  22. What I wonder is why do you guys that are having problems with these broadheads continue to use them? Redesigning them to work just does not seem right and I sure wouldnt use them.
  23. That is the problem right there with fishing forums, as soon as someone ask about a specific place or body of water they get hammerd from everyone else for asking or posting about it. Im on a fishing forum as well and its a joke. You or someone asks a question and nothing but negative replies. No one truly shares their places or techniques they give vague information. I live on the Salmon River, and Im an ex walleye tournament fisherman, flyfishing is one of many passions, love steelhead fishing and the occasional weekday early salmon fishing before the crowd over runs the river. Salmon fight and fight hard its a tug of war when your spooled up with heavy pound test and a stiff rod its a fight when you are using lighter line on a flyrod.
  24. Yeah if it was only that easy, theres not to many things in life better than watching your hunting dog work some birds and getting a crack at one. Unfortunetaly I bet 80 percent of those shot you are hearing is like opening day of shotgun in southern tier, nothing but misses. It is not as easy as one thinks. To hope its done is taking away from a heritage that goes back many many many years. Just because it isnt your cup of tea doesnt make it right to wish it away for all the ones who love hunting for pheasant.
  25. Very cool. I didnt notice the pp req on this years list. Guy at the store said none except for landowners and I never checked till now. Only hunt 2 wmu's so either I get them or dont. Good luck hunting this year.
