Hemlocks sound to be the best for cover I am no tree expert but I myself would plant spruce they seem to take a heavier snow load then the hemlock.One other thing you mentioned is having alot of ash trees not sure I would hinge cut them they are/have been and is the best Fire wood depending on size you can offset the cost of pines buy selling them.

14 outside my window and going to get colder.Please dont forget your pet's even your hunting dogs shouldn't be left outside.To answer Doc's question I think with the clothes/hunting gear I could last until power was restored.I do have a pellet stove but with no power it will not work a wood stove would be the better choice in that situation.

I know every one needs to earn a living but why not take them a donate to a less fortunate Child/Student.I know thats what I would do with them even if worth 500 bucks I would still and you have no use for them so go back to your High School and give them up to your/old coach if still the coach.Just my 2 cents
