The Expanded Antler Restrictions - Who is excited?
Skillet replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I try to step up my game, but it's hopeless. I lack even the basic skill to consistently kill prenatal fawns. I may start shooting the neighbor's holsteins, supposing they meet minimum horn width restrictions, of course. -

Yes, knitting sounds good. Maybe I'll make cute little blaze orange antler cozies for all the 1.5's to protect them from knuckle dragging mouth breathers, like myself. -

I am a freezer filler, not a trophy hunter. Some people say, "that's fine just let the small bucks go by, and shoot a doe" No, I'm going to shoot what I see, until I get enough to fill the freezer, I'm not going to pass a forkie in hopes of killing a doe who may not come along. I get a lot of vacation, and a lot of time to hunt, but it's my hunt. As soon as the freezer's full, I'm going back to squirrel hunting anyhow. Antlers are nice, everyone likes them, but they are not my focus. If a nice 4.5 came along & I happened to kill him, cool. If not, oh well, I'll gladly take his little buddy. Once AR's get to my area, I'm done deer hunting, I'll be a full time squirrel killer. Until they start a QSM program, then I'll take up knitting. -
I'd like to use a hand grenade, just once. Presto! - Killed, field dressed, skinned, and ground.

Right on, nyantler! I shoot an old Ithaca 900 smoothbore, I inherited from my grandpa. Only slugs I shoot are the cheapo Remington's. As long as I've been deer hunting in the southerntier, I've had MAYBE 5 times when the extra range of a sabot MIGHT have helped.

Burmjohn, we have a trail running through the center of a pine meadow on our property that the neighbors say is a "right of way" According to them, it is for public use. No note of it is made in our property map, and for being a public trail, they have their sides of it heavily posted. Of course, they feel free to use our section of it, obvious from the heavy wheeler, dirtbike and truck tracks. I used to have a stand up there, and had some guy on a mountain bike ride right through. He took off when he saw me coming, which I don't understand if it's a public trail. I blocked off both ends with rocks and logs, and put "No trespass" signs up. They simply went around the barrier. I was up there a month ago building a board stand, and somehow, I think I dropped a bunch of nails in the trail, and a couple of 2x6 boards with screws thru them. Oops.

We have one around camp this year. Naples, 8N. -
One time, I got drunk & broke the mortar launching tube, and we decided to try and use an empty paper towel roll as a launcher. Impressive, but it did not go well for us.

Com'on Woofer, that's a little harsh. All that junk about the average state worker making $60,000 is just that - junk. Go to www.seethroughny.net You'll see the problem. I have no problem with a productive CEO making a good buck, it's the overpaid slugs who drive me nuts. The state is no different than a private sector company, we have a bunch of worthless engineers, etc. who are bringing down over $90,000, while highway workers like me make around $30,000 (which is a fair wage, I'm not whining), and earn every dollar. Seriously, you can go on that site, type in my name and pull up my earnings history for the past 4 years.

skswayze, hunting in NY is good. Access to low pressure areas can be hard to come by. What do you hunt the most?

Trespassers are a part of life at my camp. This turkey season, I was on our hill, and could hear a road hunter below stopping every 100 yds to call. The idiot actually shocked a bird, moved in on it and killed it. After shooting, he ran down the hill, and sped away. I hesitated to move in on him, because I had a bird working, and wasn't sure if he was hunting our side of the road until I heard him shoot. By the time I got there, he was gone. I know who it was. They have a camp up the road from ours, and trespassing for them is as simple as driving by my place, and seeing if anybody's parked in the yard. I know they run all over our land when we aren't there, but this was a pretty ballsy move. Not much you can do about it.

Went out on Moon lake in Teresa. Ny, last friday. We got 7 nice ones in about 2 hours, lost a couple and missed a lot more. I use a spear that I made from an old serving fork, flattened out and with barbs filed into it. Tried pellet guns before, but found that even with a good hit, they are likely to get away. I coat them in pancake batter (with cajun foreplay seasoning in it), dip them in eggwash, then roll them in italian style bread crumbs and fry them like fish. They are really good.

Sorry guys. Problems at home, hunting is the least of my worries. Probably won't be back here for awhile. Trip was nice.
