Whats on your Christmas / Holiday Wish List???
Skillet replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
I'd like a Stihl chainsaw, or a camo rucksack. No idea what to get my girlfriend yet. I'm sure I'll wait till I have to go around in a panic. -
One of my hunting partners refuses to quit smoking on stand, in fact, he says that many deer come in to him from downwind. Almost like it causes a curious reaction. Wonder if it's the same type of thing with the incense.

I killed a 4pt over one last year, he came in on a beeline, I think it was an estrous scented one. The idea of putting it in a bucket (I also use a PVC tube) is to make it burn slower, I believe. I love these sticks, and will definitely use them again.

Good job. Did the first shot hit him?

Another hunter shot in the a$$ by his dog . . .

That's damn funny stuff right there. I'd hafta keep an eye on that bugger after that. "OK Jack*ss, you're not gonna feed me ?" -
The Montana Department of Wildlife would like to alert hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts of an increase in human / bear encounters. The state provides habitat to Black bears, as well as Grizzly bears. There are several ways to avoid a dangerous encounter with a bear. First, make the bear aware of your presence, consider wearing little bells on your clothing / gear & speaking loudly while in the outdoors. Should you encounter an aggressive bear, you need to act according to which species the bear is. Black bears are generally not aggressive, and will back down when yelled at or spoken sternly to, also try to make yourself look large. Grizzly bears are much more aggressive and require a passive response. Lay down in the fetal position, remain stiil & cover your head and neck with your arms as best as possible. Most importantly, wait until the grizzly bear has left the area, before moving, failure to remain still may trigger an aggressive rersponse. Another option available is to carry a large can of pepper spray, which may help to deter the bear from approaching you. Learn to tell the difference between the two species. Black bears are the smaller of the two, usually black in color, but sometimes they are a cinnamon or tan. They subsist mostly on nuts, berries, and carrion. Grizzly bears are much larger than black bears. They are a dark brown color. They subsist on much the same food as black bears, however are a much more efficient predator, able to kill elk, and moose sized animals. Being aware of the sign in an area will help you know which species to look out for. Larger tracks will most likely be from a grizzly. Scat is also a good indicator. Black bear scat is smaller and contains nuts, berries and possibly fur. Grizzly bear scat is larger, & will often contain little bells and smell strongly of pepper.

That's freakin' cool. Anybody who doesn't get that, never will.

I've got a deer skin and a black squirrel there now. Can't wait to see them done. The cool thing is that she gets just as excited as the hunter.

7J, ever kill one around you?

Hey all, if anybody around Rochester needs a taxidermist, check this one out. She does all of my work now, and it's amazing. Her prices are great, and she's really good with customer service and getting back to you quickly. Her name is Carol Graham, website is www.dreamseasontaxidermy.com

Cool, neat experience for your stepson.

Welcome, you seeing any bear up there this year? Always wanted to go up there and hunt them.

I know it's not a real hunt, but it'd be fun for him if I can find one I can afford. Has anybody heard of the island hunts on the susquehanna river in Bainbridge PA? Just found the site. It's called widowmaker. Seems like that might work for me, at least as far as affordability. There are some negative reviews though.

I went to Tioga when I was a kid, it was fun, and a lot cheaper back then. Checked out their site yesterday. Prices went way up, and they have a bunch of different price brackets for pigs. Makes me wonder how many times people want a cheaper pig, then shoot and have the guides say "oops wrong pig, that one costs more".

Paula, I've got room in the truck! Warren, nice pigs!

Hey all, I'm looking for a good place in NY or PA to take my son on a hog hunt. He will be 9 in April. Before I get bashed for taking him to a high fence operation, understand that I have explained it to him. He knows that it is different than a wild hunt. He spends as much time as possible in the woods with me, squirrel and turkey hunting mostly. The kid is dying to hunt. He is doing great in school. He has shown great respect for nature and the animals, as well as being very responsible with the 22 I got for him last year. I want to take him on this hunt as a reward for how proud he has made me. It will give him an experience to hold him over until he can hunt in NY. I'm looking for a place that is affordable, as well as being a realistic and enjoyable experience for him. Any ideas on where to go? Anybody had any positive or negative experiences at any preserves in the area of NY or PA? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
