  1. I bought some Scent Sticks from a guy who had been hunting in Prattsburg this past week . He said they didn't see sha-zit down there . In the past , there were deer all over the place . Either the deer are getting smarter or they got thinned out real good .
  2. DICKs honors the Field and Stream coupons so I went to DICKs in Webster . They had a Wesson #8 grinder for originally $119.99 on sale for $74.98 with a $30 rebate . I picked up a couple other things as I had a $25 off $110 , a coupon for 150 points and a $10 Rewards slip . I have as grinder but the Wesson looked to be better and has a sausage stuffer . I didn't do too bad . There were some negative reviews on the grinder . I didn't see the Ollie's ad or I would have driven to Henrietta instead of Irondequoit .
  3. I leave some of them partially open so the wind can blow through . I lost a doghouse blind one year . I had it staked with 12" tent stakes and it was tied to 2 trees . I had the windows all closed up . I didn't get to it until over a month after gun season . The blind was gone . My chair was still there . The ropes to the small trees was still there as well as the stakes . The wind ripped it loose and it was either in the hedge row or in the neighbor's pasture . I have a Hub Blinf on a Pod Platform that I had left out last winter . The roof caved in . I cut half the circle part off of an adjustable golf ball retriever and use that to support the roof when I leave the blind . I leave a couple of the windows partially open and it is anchored in 12 spots . So far so good but I don't think it will be any good next year . The material is thin and brittle .
  4. If I wasn't using the rifle , I think I would prefer the In-line ML over the shotgun . The ML is more fun to shoot .
  5. I have only had one opportunity to take a shot at a deer this hunting season . I am glad that I was able to take a doe opening day . Would I like to shoot a buck .... sure but I won't lose any sleep over it . I have meat in the freezer .
  6. Sat in my Pod Blind at the Pond and didn't see any deer . One son was 100 yards south of me and the other was 400+ yards north of me just inside of the woods . When we got there the farmer was plow / discing the field . Since we were there we already there we figured we may as well stay and hope some deer move . Nothing ! Not one darned deer . Only a John Deere .......
  7. Was in stand in Geneseo by noon. Haven't heard any shots. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  8. The farmer is plowing the crop field. I hope that helps the hunting instead of messing it up. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  9. JFB -------- The Topic was pretty much covered in this thread .........check it out for more info http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/30307-new-to-rifles/
  10. Are you looking for specifically Winchester Brand ammo or what ? If so , why ?
  11. Going to try Geneseo again tomorrow afternoon . Will meet my 2 sons that hunt around noon . Oldest son wants to hunt the woods . I told him good luck as they call the land "the Bottoms" . It's always wet and difficult walking through the field to get to the woods . You could get an ATV stuck back there . The guy that farms the property got his 4 wheel drive PU stuck at the end of the field and had to call his son to to bring the tractor and pull him out . Neither one of my sons has hunted this property in several years so they will probably bring their climbers .
  12. Are you going to reload for the 270 ? Two of my sons have Browning bolt action 270's that I reload for . If you reload , start with less powder and work out the best load . Don't start out near any max load . CCI 200 primers RELOADER 19 -- 57 GR 130 GR SIERRA GAME KING BULLETS (1820) OAL 3.34
  13. I fill the DMP when a doe makes herself available to be shot . No reason to wait until a week or two later .
  14. I shot a doe opening day in the afternoon . I saw no deer in the am . I shoot them for the meat . The doe is in my freezer . If you hunt for the horns , good luck ! DMPs are issued for a reason ..... to cut down the doe population .
  15. Belo ---- You made me spit coffee ! What are "high percentage shits" ?
  16. Carpenter's missed field goal didn't help !
  17. Missed tackle by Graham and the Patsies scored . Crap !
  18. On the doe I shot opening day , I hit just behind the right shoulder and the bullet smashed the opposite shoulder . I didn't realize this until I was cutting the deer up and found the bullet . The seers heart was like a mass of jello . I was using one of my reloads . CCI 200 -- 53 gr H4831 --- 117 gr Sierra SP (#1630)
  19. Oh , and those were definitely THUMBS. ! Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  20. Years ago ( prior to 2000 ) I had no way to haul deer other than tying on to the roof or on the trunk . Often I would wait until dark to drive the 50 miles home on 390 , 590 and Rt 104 as it would be less noticeable to other traffic . Passengers in other cars would try to look away . Usually drivers in pickups would honk and give a "Thumbs up" . After I bought a pickup truck , that all changed . Anyway , I did what I had to do to get the deer home and never felt that I had disrespected the animal in any way .
  21. I have arthritis in both hands and it is difficult to take the hide off a deer . I bought a tool a couple years ago and finally used it today . It was quite handy and a real helper . LARGE GRIPPING TEETH WITH SCISSOR ACTION .
  22. I like the fact that hunters will take their young kids hunting with them . My oldest son does that . He is taking my 9 year old grandson to camp with him this weekend . He has taken the younger twine ( boy & girl ) out back on his property and shot deer while they were with him . All 3 have enjoyed the experience . Keep it up !
