  1. Ya know , that is funny . I have hunted quite a distance from my vehicle but able to see it . And it really kills me to watch deer walk past it at maybe 10 yards or less . About 3 years ago , I was sitting in a tent blind about 100 yards down from my truck ( I now have a Subaru Forester ) that I had parked about 500 yards from the road . I hadn't seen anything in the morning and was back for the afternoon hunt . I figured I would hang in there late as I didn't have to go very far . I was day dreaming and 3 doe hauled butt down through the field about 50 yards out but too fast for a shot . I looked up toward my truck and saw a buck coming my way . I stuck the barrel of my ML out the side window and it was so cold that the tent was brittle . I ticked the side of the tent and the buck ran and stopped at about 40 yards . I had the scope on him all the way and when he stopped to look , I fired . He ran maybe 50 yards and folded up . On the way home , I was thinking , instead of using a tent blind , why not take a 8' X 8' plywood wall and paint a tractor or pickup truck on it with some cutouts to shoot through and have it blend into the background . I have seen deer walk past tractors and other farm equipment and not be the least bit fazed . http://www.downsouthhuntingforums.com/images/smiles/icon_smile_whistling.gif[/img]
  2. Doug Emblidge of Rochester's TV 13 NEWS was giving a report on Brother Wease's show . He read a report that an employee of a Car Sales Dealership in Chigago was fired for weraing a Green Bay Packers tie at work because it was bad for business . In light of that , I would warn any folks in Paterson , Rutherford , Jersey City and Hackensack , NJ not to be wearing a Pittsburg Steelers tie !!!
  3. Welcome to Hunting NY !
  4. Too slow ---- only 300 fps vs the PSE Tac 15 Groups at 30 yards , fine . What can it do at 100 yards ? Hmmmmmmmmm
  5. It's a long read but very interesting ........
  6. The Sreelers played a good 1st half . The Jets played a good 2nd half . In the last few minutes , it was anybody's game !
  7. One thing I have to say for the older , out of shape hunters ( of whick I am one ) is to take your time and take breaks . Don't get all stressed out . Every once in a while you hear of someone dragging a deer and having a heart attack . Other than the last hard drag ( getting a deer up a gulley bank ) , my hardest one was pulling a deer ( on a sled ) 500 yards up a hill three years ago . My son was on the opposite side of the gulley in South Bristol and offered to help but I didn't want to ruin his hunt and said I was fine . I was huffing and puffing when I got to the top . I got smarter this past season . My son shot a button buck . He dressed it out . I dragged it down to the lower road while he went uphill , got his truck and met me at the bottom . I've gotten smarter . I'll be 70 in September . I guess if 40 is average , that makes me "above average" !
  8. I had to pay $21 each for the Bow and ML permits . I will be 70 in September and will no longer be required to pay these 2 fees ( unless they change the present requirements ) . No cost for Turkey Tags .......
  9. I have no idea how many or what percent of NYS folks have the Lifetime License . Those that do only have to pay extra for the bow , ML and Bird Stamps . The Lifetime drops the yearly amount of money going into DEC coffers so I would think at some point , the DEC would start to lose money especially with less people getting into the hunting .
  10. I am not familiar with the NYC rules / regulations concerning various permits . I have never heard of any requirement for a "shotgun permit" . I am aware that NYC has stricter laws on permits than the rest of the state . When applying for the pistol permit , I would check the "for hunting" box . If you plan to Bow hunt , you need to have satisfactorily completed both the Gun Safety and Bow Safety courses . My youngest son wanted to bow hunt only . He took the Bow safety course and passed with no problem . A week before season opened , he went to Gander Mt to get the Bow License but couldn't because he hadn't taken the Gun Safety course ( even though he had no intention to gun hunt ) . It helps if you know the rules / regulations .
  11. This topic has been moved to General Hunting. [iurl]http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php?topic=3395.0[/iurl]
  12. I believe there are some in the Southern Tier . Contact the DEC and see what they will tell you about hogs in various areas .
  13. I started using regular hearing aids last spring . I only use them for bow hunting and don't put them in until I am on stand . I think they cost about $4800 so I don't want to lose them . I can hear the squirrels and Blue Jays better now . I don't wear them during gun season . Soooo , if your hearing is normal , the enhancement must be a real plus ! http://www.downsouthhuntingforums.com/images/smiles/thumbup.gif[/img]
  14. Archery Talk ----- it's a bow site --- GOOGLE it and check it out
  15. I wouldn't put it past the legislatures to try to find a loophole to get at that money ! Like , where is all the money from the Lottery that is supposed to support Education ?
  16. Welcome to Hunting NY . No hogs up this way .
  17. I bought the Lifetime License when they had it for us Geezers for $50 so I won't vote .
  18. Have you taken the Hunter Safety courses ? If not , you need to take both . My youngest son found out the hard way that he couldn't get a bow license without taking the Gun Safety course .
  19. You should always show your pee'rs respect !
  20. I have never hunted there but I have seen more dead deer on Route 81 than any other highway .
  21. It said she's from Fruitport . It sounded like she was a fruitcake !!!
  22. Won't it be great when the tepm gets back up to freezing ! ???
