  1. I agree with SportsmanNH, I take my clothes out and hang them on the wife's clothesline and spray them down good, once they dry they are good to go. After having a good dose of Lymes I will take my chances. Al
  2. I like to put an orange vest on my hunting dogs for several reasons. Visibility for one, can't be too careful, I also clip on a bell up front on the ring which helps me keep track of my dog. Where I bird hunt the cover is infested with ticks, I will spray the vest with permethrin, it helps keeping the ticks off the dog and lastly it offers some chest protection when working thick cover. Al
  3. While many do use stands it is not an absolute, ground blinds both permanent and portable will work for concealment. Placement of your cover and the wind are big players. Get some practice in and become as proficient as possible, good luck to you. Al
  4. Same here, came in the mail today!
  5. Introducing young Ruff to a bumper and retrieving, he is doing great. Al
  6. Like WNY Whitetailer said I usually get mine in early August, so they should be coming anytime I think. Al
  7. The video and comments made on it confirm pretty much what I have seen down through the years when it comes to gunpowder and also ammo's lifespan. It is all about proper storage, I have ammo I loaded over fifty years ago and it still fires fine and it's accuracy is pretty much the same as the day it was loaded. Keep it in a stable dry environment and it will last for a very long time. Al
  8. I think there were feelers looking into the purchase of TC and it took time for the capital to be raised. I think S&W wanted to try and sell the whole works together in hope that TC would be resurrected instead of liquidating inventory and machinery for pennies on the dollar to outfits like Numrich. Al
  9. I am a fan of TC firearms, the muzzleloaders, rimfires and single shot rifles I have from this company have served me well and I am glad to see them back in business. Al
  10. Picked up some training aids to fire up and tune my Dogs, a small flock of Birmingham Roller Pigeons, I will be testing my Airedale pup "Ruff" to see if he has some inclination to hunt birds and also will be working with my Setter Matty to tighten her up on point. Have them housed in a vacant dog run for now, once I get the loft cleaned up they will be living up there. These are young birds and it will take them awhile to get used to their new home. Al
  11. With the amount of shooting I like to do I have become a huge fan of the newer modern air guns, the good ones can produce gilt edge accuracy, and enough power to hunt with all for a reasonable price per shot compared to even low end bulk 22 ammo. Today I upped my game and put together a Weihrauch 25 cal gas piston rifle for mostly small game. German made and it reeks quality, everything about it is first rate, fit and finish along with a great trigger, just outstanding. The one drawback with many of the better air rifles is they are heavy and this one weighs almost 9 lbs. That was a big determining factor on my scope selection, I got a couple of 4x12s and a 6.5x20 sitting around but I feel I really do not need that much magnification on a 50 yard hunting-plinking gun along with putting the weight in the 11 lb range. So for now at least I mounted one of my favorite scopes on the Weihrauch, a 2.5X lightweight Leupold, I have several of these scopes mounted on Deer rifles and I love them. Took it out to the range for a quick sight in and at thirty yards I made several 5 cent coin size ragged one hole groups, I was thrilled and I do not think I would have shot any better with the 6.5X20 mounted. I have a big selection of various pellets to try so hopefully when I get some time I will really put this rifle through it's paces and have more to report. Al
  12. Saw the local Hen out in my back pasture and she still has 5 half grown poults in tow, biggest brood I have seen in recent years. Al
  13. Well it won't be long before the new paper tags make their debut, I get the lifetime license in the mail and have to sign up online for the bow and muzzleloader tags. I t will be interesting to see how smooth the rollout is. Al
  14. Hit the range this morning to make sure two of my air rifles are shooting to the point of aim, also my Remington 597 22 mag was checked for zero. A couple of new gadgets being tested this summer and so far I have been impressed with both. First is the Garmin Xero chronograph, this this is as advertised and a game changer, no more screwing around shooting through sky screens or hooking up any wires. You just set beside you gun and concentrate on your shooting and the Garmin does the rest. I also acquired a 12 volt air gun pump and the same can be said for it, fills your PCP guns easily, you can take it on the go with a battery or use it with a house plug adapter, either way it works like a charm and beats the hell out of a hand pump. These modern air rifles are serious and shoot great, the left target is the Gamo swarm break barrel, the right was the Benjamin p rod at 30 yards. the woodchuck was at 100 for the 22 mag. Both the Swarm and P rod clocked at slightly over 600 fps with heavy lead pellets, the maggie was right where she was supposed to be at about 1950 fps. Let the good times roll!
  15. I have no cameras, but I do quite a bit of early scouting for both Deer and small game and it is usually combined with other activities like stump shooting with one of my recurves or plinking with one of my air guns. Also a good time to get my dogs in the woods and do some training. I go along observing mast crops and game trails along with finding other game sign, I just like being in the woods taking a walk and see what is out there, it is good for the soul. Al
  16. I have rotated firearms on the bench for over fifty years so barrels can cool and if it works for you no problem, continue on. With the amount of shooting and handload development I do this barrel cooler speeds things up much better for my sessions on the bench, a game changer for me. Al
