Good Thinking Doc ... I have a few solar powered motion sensor lights around the house and I always know when someone of something is moving in the backyard / sideyard / front yard or in the driveway !

This past year I convinced my wife to get her hunting license and when she did I took her to Dicks Sporting Goods and she zeroed in on the only pink gun they had on the wall ! Its a nice Ruger .22 ! She's happy with it , maybe your wife would be also ? It was a Christmas Gift (Notice the Christmas Story in the background ?)

Makes a lot of sense ! Almost zero recoil , weapon would never leave the target , cheap and with enough holes in the assailant they will not be going anywhere !

The first Deer (buck) my son shot , it was kicked from across the stream where I hunt and ran under my tree stand where I was sitting . I let it keep running because it was running directly towards where my son was posted and he nailed him ! Great opening day !
