  1. Doc, I remember a few weeks back discussing marginal shots and you seemed really set against them. To me this is no difference. The responsibility we have as hunters starts way before the shot and continues way after it. I went back and reread this entire post. no one got on his a$$ until he flipped out on Does suggestion that not taking the shot was an option. He came out and said he didn't reget anything and I sure got the feeling he learned nothing from the experience. bad things can happen to ALL of us it is part of the sport. We have to learn from them and if someone is going to take the stance that they would act the same with the same possible outcome....I am not sure we need increasing hunter numbers that badly. My 2 cents.....and if you throw in an extra couple bucks you might have enough for a cup of coffee...they are just words and my opinion and not worth all that much. This was a low percentage shot and just the type of thing I remember them covering in the bow hunter education course way way way back when
  2. Hmmmmm. guess the clueless one was staring back at you in the mirror this morning while you were brushing your teeth. I will give you that the online info at DEC doesn't match up with the printed book or the online PDF. I sent them an email suggesting they change that since they failed to have enough printed copies available.
  3. Don't hold your breath this time Steve...lol
  4. Posted Yesterday, 04:36 PM You ppl kill me...a person shoots a deer ...obvious way darker than should..IMO and looses said deer ... Arrow sticking out of a shoulder and it's...."Good luck ...go get em good luck...He doesn't find said deer ....and what do you guys say when he tells ya he's going right back out?...Ohh... "Good Luck go get em best luck..." This guys tells you basically the same scenario and you some of you criticize and jump his ass for not making the right decision...Just so so many Wow moments on this sight Who were you talking about in this post then?
  5. He is one luck guy that he could get the phone out and dial it. I know this isn't on topic but I want every one to put a contact in their phone. list the emergency number of your wife/husband/someone to contact....list it as ICE (incase of emergency). that way they have someone to notify if you should get injured and cant speak. They will look at your contacts (assuming the screen isn't password locked) I know a lot of times i don't carry my wallet with me and the only ID I have is my license but there is no address or contact info on that just your address.
  6. AMEN Biggame....that was my point. Crap is gonna happen...we just have to learn form it and move on.
  7. . Even if you believe that area exists...it is small and not try to pass through it from an elevated stand. Now if you are too far forward that may be a different story
  8. Missy and Sampson.....I was right there wish you until the "I don't refer anything" comment. "How could I NOT shoot" comment. I am all for learning from mistakes. And doe has a great point on deer anatomy. Let's assume the shot is in front of the diaphragm as he said. Get onto a treestand and tale a 15bluebird yard shot at a deer. Think of how narrow that nomans land is above the lungs and under the spine at ground level....now elevate to 15the feet and 15lap yards distance. I don't think its possible to get through without hitting the off side lung....that is besides the point really. Wee all know bad thongs happen and it is part of the sport. Those two comments spoke to attitude. He came across as Simone that thought he deserved to take the shot because of all the tome he has spent....and one that would do it again without a second thought.
  9. And then he got lights....and kept looking......but it was a clear forcasr night and a bluebird day to follow.....there is the difference between the two scenarios....a lot of deer are tracked after dark following an evening hunt.....and fyi...I am not saying uncle on the sunset times just yet...when I do I will say I was wrong on the times and truly have gone past out of my ignorance on the issue...but not just yet
  10. That comment was in reference to WHY you posted it...not the information you posted....which was confirmed with your comment in this thread about how in you opinion it was too dark...that is still have no doubt about
  11. Grow...I am going to have to check on that. I know I am showing my age but their table is Albany time. The old charts used to have a plus and minus to get you to local sunset. If they are holding the state to Albany sunset then I have been doing it wrong and will have to adjust.
  12. I agree....there isn't a right or wrong answer....just all possibilities to consider before letting the arrow go. What works for one may not for others
  13. Never been faced with the situation with that kind of snow...I have passed because of rain though
  14. and Grow...if you can't see that the two situations are differnt, I don't know what to tell you. We are bow hunting...the ability to track our quarry is everything.
  15. and if the hit isn't good? what then
  16. You certainly took your shot posting the sunrise chart....post made about hit at 6:06 and sunset at 6:07. Tell me it was just an informational post and I call you a bald faced liar
  17. I kind of think that makes all the difference.
  18. NJG...one thing I couldn't tell fro the original post....any idea on how much penetration you got? Kinda sounded like it was buried to the fletchings
  19. Sudzy... I kind of like these decission and ethics kind of discussions because I hope they make us all think a bit. So you are sitting in a stand and it has been "snowing like crazy" for the last hour and 3/4's...forecast is to continue all night. you are roughly 15 minutes away from the end of the days hunt....you shoot?
  20. Apples and oranges Grow. There was nothing in the weather of the first one that would have impeded recovery. the two scenarios aren't the same. and for the record....it wan't after shooting light even given the attempt you tried to make with your sunset chart. Take your case of burn ass with him somewhere else
  21. You are wrong. I have physically seen it myself. and the big reason it can happen is two fold....lungs are multi lobbed and if the fat actually clogges the hole a vacuum can be maintained to allow some breathing. ask an EMT if they ever pull out an object that is puncturing a lung and why they won't. I saw my buddy shoot a buck while we were erecting a stand. beautiful hit from on the ground..pass through and double lung. we waited a half an hour and completed the install of the treestand overlooking a mowed clover field.....deer had run into the corn lot behind us. After the half our we tracked....deer never laid down but stood several time and he ended up IN the cut clover field about 20-30 yards from the treestand we just put up....I was in it and setting it and he didn't come out into the clover until we entered the corn a half hour after the shot. When we found him...two tennis sized balls of fat on both sides and both lungs punctured. Don't believe for a minute avery good shot will be like the videos and result in a toppled buck in 50 yards. All I am getting at is as responsible hunters we have to make choices......I have set in my stand through some nasty weather in hopes it breaks...I have also let deer walk during that time because I was worried about losing them. I also have left the woods when it moves in and is forecast to continue or get worse. That is my choice...yours may not be the same...and that is fine. You just have to be able to look yourself in the mirror in the morning and know you did what you believe to be right.
  22. Exactly HHC...I was all about supporting him until he got punky with Doe for being honest...then he comes out with the "don't regret anything"??? ayfkm? Anyone can screw up and hind sight is 20/20 but you have to be able to learn something from bad experiences and I ge the feeling he would be right back out in a downpour or snow storm sticking another one....
  23. I would have rather seen you make a good shot on an immature buck and recover it
  24. I have seen double lunged deer stay on their feet for over a half an hour. Personally if the weather is pounding---rain or snow. where I could lose tracking ability...I stay home...it is a killer knowing they are still out there but just as you proved...bad things can happen with the best intentions. Food for thought.
  25. The state land by me just had a logging company in there 2 years ago and logged all fall and winter.
