It is a fact of life for them. Think of it this way. If they don't appear to be bothered and you can stand it....think of it as a cover scent. DO you think they could smell you over it?...might work out as a blessing and you might get to take a yote off of it while on watch.

Final DEC 5 year management plan
Culvercreek hunt club replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
THis is nothing new compared to what was up before...right? -
HB I am a little confused by your post. You said it doesn't help with less genetically mature deer. i am not sure what you mean. whether a buck is a fawn or a 10 year old he has the same genetics. Are you talking about inferior genetics? If that is what you meant, That deer could have been very healthy and a very good breeder. He could have been a very productive member fo the herd. If we want, as part of QDMA, to harvest undesirable racks to promote the "perfect racks" doesn't that feed right into the thought the program is all about racks?

I mis read as well.....anyone saying it is unethical is a moron...lol.

THis actually happened to my Brother in Law too. The littel bugger flew towads his face 3 times. He was in a treestand in full camo including fase mask. Once he took his face mask off the owl never came back. He never actually made contact with him but was inches from his face. He is convinced the owl wal responding to the flashes of white as his eyes blinked. It was a full face mask with two eye holes.

I agree a quick kill is always the best---and a win I hate seeing a wounded animal. I really try for the highest perentage shots I can. That said, bad things happen even on the highest percentage shots. Once you hit that trigger or release that string and the projectile is on it's way, we can't control it. There is only one way to assure that no bad shots are made, shots that some feel shouldn't be taken, good shots that went bad....that would be to stop all hunting so there aren't any shots. I don't want to see that train leave the station. I am not on the band wagon that there are so many piss poor hunters out there. I no there are some in our ranks but not the numbers that some of the stories on the site would lead you to think. Let's face it it makes for pretty boring reading to tell a story about how you saw a deer and nothing was wrong with it (no arrows sticking out of it), or the hunter that was parked in a state land parking area that didn't litter, or the guy who still hunted to your stand location-saw you -gave you an "I'm sorry wave"- and then detoured around you. Human nature is to sensationalize the extremes but I think the vast majority of our ranks are upstanding folks that occassionaly have bad things happen.

Well there you go. Buckrub has solved this debate with his very insightful comment. Since he has the last word on ethics np sense discussing a gut shot deer or one with a leg blown off.

What a difference 24 hours can make. Beautiful morning. Same two bucks as yesterday at 15the yards. Spike and a nice 4. Deer were in the fields this morning but no shooters yet.

As for the food plot thing. (I do it too) Are we messing with the carrying capacity of the land? If the natural land (modified as we have through development) has a carrying capacity, isn't that what teh DEC is ideally managing towards? Are we inflating the population to a point that could be a problem if the plotting stopped? Let's face it. food plots are not cheap. if the enonomy goes in the tank worse than now how many folks will have the extra cash to do it? (feed the deer vs feed the family). New York has some great deer I think the eastern end of the souther zones is a bit handicapped from what you guys say about it. Out here the hunting is great. there are Mature bucks and the doe take is very liberal. I don't believe we can ever get to the mid west model because of the lack of major Ag farming. the food supply just isn't here and I don't think plotting will make it so. I know a lot of you guys talk herd health and I think many of you truely mean it. but there and many many guys out there that fly around the banner of QDM and all they see are big racked bucks. And that stereo type (earned or not) is tied to the program. I think the TV shows have hurt this effort more than anything else. The shows are about money and it doesn't take much of a leap to tie the money to big racks. This is what gets alot of the guys frosted.....the drive for $$$ and that is is all about racks (not saying all of you think this way) but as much of our lives are....it is about perception. And when it is about money and horns and not about what many think hunting truely is....it meets resistance. I have no idea if I even made sense...lol

Just for the record I thik alot of the sheep and cattle out west are free ranging. I think Wegmans even sell free range chickens....lol for about twice the price of normal.

Sorry Phade.....using the word purse and Man in the same sentence just doesn't work...lol. wallet...k......money clip...fine...purse??? nope not happening. fanny pack or backpack and I am right there with you.....but if it has a strap and it is over your shoulder you are swinging from the wrong side of the plate...lol

3 time in 30 years of hunting for me. but not since I have gotten a little more selective in the size of the bucks. Hard enough to get one mature buck in close to say nothing about 2. I am betting the records wouldn't show the true picture though. I wonder how many of those "first" bucks of the year are on wives/girlfriends or kids tags. I bet more double are in that category than truely reported ones.

LOL. I gotta have you look up the word compromise.Sounds like a change to what is currently in place for hunters...shorter gun season....further from the rut...one buck limit.....compromise would be them getting something in return for that. You aren't by any chance in volved in the current administration...lol. Just bustin. Penalties do need to be really stepped up on poaching. Like mnay of our laws the punishments are not stiff enough to be a true deterrant

October 1st to Last day of ML...I am MIA. she knows it and has never had a problem with it. My little sister just got engaged and my father laid down the law. No fall wedding...lol. or she will have to use cut-outs for me and Dad in the family photos.

I think alcohol and booze mix just fine...lol. Seriously though. i have been around guys that have a beer with lunch. Never saw any difference in them. I wouldn't tolerate a hunter that was really drinking though. I just can't see mixing firearms and booze.

If DEC implements aspects of their 5 year plan the does during archery season and ML season will be a thing of the past. all doe take will be by DMP. on the testosterone comment....take a hunter in the NZ with no doe permits and (amny areas don't issue them) and they only gun hunt. no bow ...no ML....spike or 4 point walks by...how about the 6 point? how about the 1.5 yo 8 point?....would you shoot any of them?

One Thing I Don't Want Around My Stand!!
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
reminds mo of what happened about 8 years ago up north during the Archery opener. It was cool morning...nice and quiet. I placed buddy of mine in a climber at a logging road intersection on my uncles property. I was on the other side of 200 acres. He called me on the radio with a "Wherein the hell did you put me" comment. He was sitting there and hears this steady crunch...chrunch getting closer ....He was surrounded in a pine cluster in a harwood knob and could only see about 25 yards. It kept getting closer so he stood and got ready. her comes 2 ladies in full jogging gear trotting right through the woods. They were as surprised to see him as he was to see them. They fell all over themselves apologizing. They wer not hunters and no one in their famlies were. They thought deer season was still weeks away. Most equate deer season with all the shooting and give little thought to bows and that the seasons could be different. I asked him if he had booted them off the property since it was posted and I was the only one with permission.NOPE...he didn't ...said they were to cute and he hoped they came back...lol. He never was that serious of a deer hunter -
Latte in our thermos and keish in our lunch bags and doilies to rest our wepons on so we don't mare the finish on our treestands

One Thing I Don't Want Around My Stand!!
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I know you can't say much because it is his property but you might want to remind them that is is archery season this saturday....I have taken the safety approach and had it work. they didn't realize the hunters would be out this early...they weren't around the rest of the year. -
what pistol to buy?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to BizCT's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
For Elmo---lol The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper. -
