  1. Steve. let me start by saying I am not on board with what he did. There are many cemetaries that are not fully developed. if you look at the ariial on this site probably half the cemetary is wooded. There is a cemetary by me that guys normally drive onto land they can hunt. I bet only a quarter of that on is actually cemetary. the back side that you can see from the road looks like some of the nastiest stuff a deer could get in. Now with that said this guy had to have permission from adjoining landowners. Using google earth and the measuring tool I can't find a WOODED spot that isn't within 500' of a structure on adjoining property. There are areas withint the cemetary that meet the 500' rule but those are fully developed cemetary.
  2. PYGMY...I agree. I was taught to dispatch at a distance. My father beat it into my head. I also have had several occasions to do required deeds on the farms I worked on. Quick and clean was the order of the day. I often get made fun of because of the amount of ammo I take into the field....one reason is mot to end up in a situation where I have to use my knife for anything but gutting
  3. http://www.quarterbore.com/library/articles/rem700trigger.html . This is actually a pretty clear write up on how to do the adjustment.
  4. barrel seems really short to me. but I guess that is the design. Heck many encore pistols carry a 15' barrel
  5. Not mine....I came across this ad from a forum I am watching to find a pistol Seems like a screaming deal for someone that needs a deer rifle. Scope is over kill but the price sounds right. http://www.nyfirearms.com/forums/firearms-sale/22029-marlin-xl7-bolt-rifle-steuben-county-pics.html
  6. I was suprised that one I know of wasn't on the sheet. Reliable source....Down near Scoharie. man fired multiple shots at a deer running between him and the road. multiple rounds hit multiple houses on the other side of the road. Arrest was made and from what I understand somehow they ended up at his house and he had illegal handguns as well.
  7. It is sad but the way the laws are now what he did is no different than a speeding ticket. It is a violation not even a misdemeanor
  8. sawhim over at Delta Sonic car wash in August. He was teary eyed as oll the vehicles were pulling in and he saw the ravages of the roadkill that was driving past him.....what a waste on all thos bumpers, grills and windshields
  9. the best thing they will do for you at a gunsmith is actuall polish the pats so the travel is consistent and smooth. I did it at my friends house who's father is REALLY into guns and he happened to be an old dentist. his old dental ezuipment he used in his gun restoring hobby. he polished the parts with the same bits he polished porcelin caps and the thing is like a dream . I think sometimes the poundage of the pull isn't the issue but a gunsmith will be able to take care of all of it for you
  10. my 700 "didn't have an adjustable trigger" but it does. The adjusting screws on mine had that sealant over them, i guess to discourage their use. I wouldn't try it unless you are comfortable with what you are doing. On my 700 one screw set the travel and the other set the trigger weight. I wan't to caution you that if you over adjust the travel that thing will not be safe. the only way you will know is to drop out the trigger assembly. It should be very visible if it is adjustable
  11. While they may not process suffering the same way we do the reality is they do feel pain. That reaction is not processed as an emotion and expanded into suffering but pain is real as the instincts you mentioned.
  12. That is the size of an average Grizzly. Damn...NOTE TO SELF---Buy a bigger gun if you are going to hunt in PA
  13. Not sure but one is in a very city type area and one is very rural. DEC has done nothing. The one I can plainly see from my office and the deer have been there today.
  14. Going to sound sad but I have made two report to DEC about bait being used this year. Nothing has been done and the bait stations are still there and being used. I think the baiting violation is like the cell phone used to be. they ticket if it is in conjunction with another crime. I just don't understand why they haven't done anything.
  15. Responding to an ATV trespass complaint in the town of Indian Lake an ECO discovered deer and bear bait in the area. On October 22, after a month-long investigation, three men were charged with numerous violations of Environmental Conservation Law. Michael J. Weis, 48, of Babylon (Suffolk County) was charged with illegally feeding bear and deer, placing a salt lick on lands inhabited by deer and bear, ATV infractions (all violations), and illegally discharging sewage, a misdemeanor. Vincent Pizzello, 58, of West Islip (Suffolk County) was charged with illegally feeding deer, shooting deer over bait and failure to carry hunting license and carcass tags while hunting, all violations. George M. Saraiva, 42, of New City (Rockland County) was charged with illegally feeding deer and shooting deer over bait, both violations. The three men were issued summonses to appear before the town of Indian Lake Justice Court. Weis faces maximum penalties of $38,750 in fines and up to one year and 90 days in jail. Pizzello faces up to $750 in fines and up to 45 days in jail. Saraiva faces up to $500 in fines and up to 30 days in jail. So i guess the moral of the story is shooting deer and bear over bait isn't as big of a deal a pooping in the woods...lol. Bet that guy wishes he took the extra time at home that morning...lol
  16. I didn't read this one either....lol. Believe it or not it is one of the few websites that are banned by our company's server...
  17. Deerthug- you hit it right on the head. during the chasing period the bucks actively chase and the does flee with little regard for car traffic. Deer movement really inclrease during the breeding cycle as a whole. I don't think you would find these published statistics but I have a close friend and a cousin that are State Troopers. They are in different areas and both told me the Friday before the opener the State police broke their all time record for responses to deer struck accidents (before the season opened) That record was broken the Satuday of the opener and broken again on the Sunday of opening weekend. Highest all time weekend reporting of deer struck accidents for a weekend and 3 all time high days. I would be willing that how the opener, rut and traffic for a long holiday week all lined up for the numbers. Maybe the PETA folks should propose that no one drives their cars during the breeding cycle. Wonder if these tree huggers have ever seen what a big mature buck can do to one of those little hybrids at highway speeds.
  18. Legally... the tag does not need to be attached to the carcass until it is at the point of transpotation. it could easily be filled out and in his poket and from the pics it doesn't even look like it has been gutted. I love how hunters immediately pull out the "illegal" card on a good buck. If I ever end up needing a jury of my peers I will have my fingers crossed that no one knows I hunt...lol Great buck and would love to hear the entire story.
  19. Don't be surprised if it isn't poaching. but they will get to the bottom of it. We had a deer dumped by property we hunted. Turned out a guy had stopped and took a deer that the police had shot due to a car hit. The lady driving the car didn't want it so the cop wrote the tag to this guy. The dink took the horns and cape and best cuts and dumped the deer. From what I heard he got a ticket for some littering type violation but everything else was legal. Getting rid of animal parts isn't easy. I have to double bag mine and sneak them in the garbage can. One year they refused to take my garbage because I had deer skeleton and hide in there. I was pissed and they wouldn't back off. I asked them what was the difference if I bought a ham and trew the bone out. never did get a good response.
  20. I actually hunt both and really consider myself a hunter...lol. I want to wish you luck on finding facts on this. We can't get NY hunters to report their kills there is no way anyone has any consrete data on wounding deer in NY
  21. just take a 22 out there...a .223, 22-250, .222 lol. They are all 22's
  22. Elmo hit it on the head with his speed limit analogy. I vote leave it as is.
