  1. I tend to always go for the odd number of blades (one reason it took me so long to try Rage). At my bow hunter's safety course many many moons ago the instructor had two wood picture flames with a ton of nails coming out off the face of the frame. There were so many rubber bands stretched across the frame in all different directions that it had to be 1/4" thick over both of the frames. A big layer of stretched rubber. Through one frame he shot a 2 blade broad head. Rubber bands were cut and took off flying. Through the second frame he shot a 3 blade of same weight and cutting diameter. The rubber bands flew everywhere. WAY more bands cut than with the 2 blade. His demonstration and point he was making, was a 2 blade can slice between muscle fibers and not cut them. on a 3 blade, even if one blade does slide between fibers the other 2 cut the same fiber. Yielding better blood trails. I have NO idea if that is right or wrong but the rubber bands sure seem to show it. Granted the deer doesn't usually die from cut muscle but without the cut muscle the blood has a hard time gettign out and onto the ground. That was why I picked the 3 blade out of the ones you recommended.
  2. Thanks. I had to change those shiny high gloss limbs so i figured I'd try a dip.
  3. We've been making so much sausage it has been two years since I canned any up and I am finally out. I will be putting up some more this year for sure.
  4. You could. I think it would really be stretching the logic though. To be fair, I don't hunt public land anymore unless I want to wander over the line at camp. How many years have we had crossbows on the scene in NY? I really don't remember but I have seen no difference in the last two weeks of deer season since they were included. I haven't seen of heard the deer drives that were warned against. I posted up that one study that was done at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and the average shot distance for the crossbow hunters was not that much more than the compound hunters. I believe the wounding rate was less though. The chicken little, the sky is going to fall if they come to NY hasn't happened. If it is fully included it won't happen. I am hunting exclusively with my recurve this season. I will be in the woods with a buddy that will be carrying my compound for the first half and his crossbow for the last two weeks. I hope he smacks a giant and him hunting with it won't change my hunt one bit.
  5. I got 6 coats of matte clear coat on them and mounted them up. I have 100 arrows through it since then and no cracking. So, these should get me through the season. Here's a few pics of them mounted up. (and the broadheads I will be shooting. or should I call them anvils at that weight..lol. I can't wrap my head around that heavy but that's the weight of the field tips). I was going to try all instinctive but just don't have the confidence yet in my ability. Running one pin for 20 yards.
  6. That is the old Seneca Army Depot.
  7. I've had two Springers in my life. They have always been my favorites Just something about Spaniels. . Our best friends are certainly family members. I am sorry for your loss.
  8. Thanks Rob, The instructor of the class mentioned it. That is back down in my old stomping grounds. I am going to see if I can make it down at least for a bit.
  9. I am not using it this year. I am going to run with the rynoskin and see if it really is up to the hype.
  10. I never would have looked under "Regions" for Trapping..lol
  11. I told them I was only making one pitch that was political. I explained the truth about firearms and calibers. Showed them the round typically used for evil and then the rounds for deer. Then explained and showed the different actions. Luckily a guy can to the range that had an AR. They didn’t see how it worked any different than a few we had there. One asked “why would they report something so untrue”. I said it’s all playing on emotion working towards an end
  12. There are a couple near me. One where i took the course. I will be joining one of them. I am really trying to get my schedule to work. The big show is at the Herkimer County Fir Grounds in Frankfort, NY this weekend. I think Thursday-Saturday.
  13. Something I always wanted to try and never seemed to get around to it. Seems like a good filler for after deer season and before spring. I am not going hog crazy. I have some properties that could use a few less coyote and fox and around my house I can certainly hit those and some coons. I attended the education class and already bought my license. We don't have a trapping section on the site that I saw anywhere so this may be more appropriate in the predator hunting section. If anyone has any old trapping items that a layign around and wanna turn them into some cash, let me know. lol. I am literally starting from ground zero.
  14. Saturday was our Range day and second class of Whitetail 101. The participants did a great job at the range. Very safety aware, took all the instruction very well and shot some really great groups. You will notice the participants all sporting nice new hearing protection and shooting glasses. That is all compliments or Steve863 on this forum. He supported the branch last year and did this year as well. He shared in the celebration of Ryan's deer last year at camp and I am very lucky to be able to call him a friend. I also would like to thank all the mentors that were able to take part in this day's instruction, especially Moog. Thank you Brian. I am glad you were willing to mentor this year. It is very rewarding my friend. There are others, but I did not ask to name them on the internet so I will just leave it as thank you to all of them. We started out with a safety talk and some basic firearms instruction and then proceeded to work our way up through calibers to gauge their sensitivity to the guns, noise and recoil. Started out with 22LR, 22 Mag, 223, 243, 308, 20 ga, 30-06, 12 Gauge. Our ladies made it all the way through the 308 and 20 gauge and we had the guys all shoot all thee way through the ought6 and 12 ga. On the 50 yard targets, I am happy to say they put all, but a few fliers, into 2" rings. Many of them shot much tighter groups than that. From a typical seated and rested position that we will be using in most of the hunts I am confident they will do their part if we can get a deer in front of them. We grilled up some venison hotdogs (secret Culver Creek recipe) and had some salads to take the edge off while we got through the second class. It was a great weather day and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. Participants and mentors. Next stop is the NY Hunter's safety course on September 14, with a little more shooting. I think I am going to show them the importance of a good rest buy having them do a little short range off hand shooting.
  15. Everyone is last minute. I had to stop into Field and Stream to pick up some slugs becasue one of the mentors coming to our range day on Saturday just told me he didn't have enough. no Winchesters on the shelves. Loaded with Remington though. I asked and they said stuff will be trickling in. Should be here by mid to late October. lol. I asked if they waited until the last minute to sight their guns in. Sorry but if I hit October I want to be bow hunting, not sitting on the range.
  16. I'll be shooting the VAP 250gr 3 blade this year.
  17. Thanks you Moog and Biz. I appreciate it. I probably should have worded that better. I trying to figure out how balled up their system is. Last year on here there were quite a few folks on this site that really stepped up an contributed through our campaign. I am hoping to have the system get set up right and them to get the work out so there doesn't have to be a campaign.
  18. The Licensing Agents should be able to find the item to purchase right near the Habitat stamp. You tell them the amount to put in from $1 to $999.
  19. Thank you , I appreciate it. I am trying to get some data together to send to the NYS licensing group trying to show they really need to take action to better inform the LA's
