  1. if you or anyone else following this have an interest in participating as a host, mentor or branch volunteer, there should be programs sprouting up in the other branches as well.   3. Actually one of the participants made the cupcakes. Not venison but damn they were fantastic. They were not only frosted and topped but filled. I’ll tell you I had to roll myself out of that cabin. I was stuffed. Everyone’s dishes were fantastic. Not sure if I mentioned it in previous post but we are asking all the participants and the mentors/instructors to give us their recipes for each dish. We are going to put them together and hand them out to each subsequent class and keep adding to the cookbook. That way each class is contributing to the future ones. I was nervous going into this. Something new. I’ve taken others out and got them hunting before but not in a very formal setting. The classes and hunter education and range time is the easy part. Getting the mentors to step up is the challenge. What we did with our program that some of the others didn’t was to keep it small. (By accident really because only 7 put up the deposit. 5 could only do it). The small class let us all get to know everyone. There was a connection and we were able to take them on multiple hunts to give them as much of a chance to get a deer and learn as much as we could push to them. I won’t support going to a bigger class and just doing one big bulk one day hunt and having it be done. I really like how it worked out and hope it goes as smoothly next year. With the articles I am seeing emails form people that want to participate not only as students but as mentors and with property to hunt. Some of them out your way. I’d be willing to bet any branch that wanted to do it could place students in a class next year with very little effort given the press its received. You guys need any assistance just holler.
  4. One final note on the Field to Fork Program. It appears it is getting some pretty good national coverage. Not only the National's event but the other States including us. I don't think I can legally post the article but an article appeared in the January 9th Wall Street Journal under the title. "Put Down the Kombucha and Pick Up a Crossbow: Hipsters Are the New Hunters" I'll start a new thread for the 2019 program when we get it going. Thank you all for following along. Most of the participants have been on here lurking and they appreciate the positive feedback.
  5. My suggestion when doing ground is for like a pound or 1.5 pound package we make the bags out of 11" rolls. Make them about 10" long and put the ground in when it in one very packed ball. seal it and once its out of the sealer, use your hand, a glass or a rolling pin and press the ground flat so it fills the entire bag and about 1/2" thick. It stacks unbelievably well in the freezer this way and it thaws in a snap. We do this with our Venison Italian sausage as well, because we partially thaw and them cut the flat slab into quarters and grill. We like the Italian on a good burger type roll. It is easier to put peppers and onions on an keep them there.
  6. I would have sold that thing the day the official score was confirmed. Doesn't change the fact that the hunter shot it and I would have gotten a duplicate rack made for the mount. But it would have been sold prior to another season beginning just for this reason

  8. Last night wrapped up our first annual Field to Fork program. We had a social dinner with the participants and their spouses/guests, the mentors as instructors. Everyone brought a venison dish to pass made from their harvest. The food was outstanding and was accompanied by some drinks and many many laughs. Each participant was asked to recount their hunting story to the group and I have to say that sure was the highlight of the night for me. We were very lucky this year to have 5 participants that were so wonderful. Top that off with being able to have all 5 experience successful hunts and this program will be an annual program for the branch for sure. I want to say a thank you to the mentors and instructors that really made this work, Mike Edwards, Moira Michie Tidball,Terry Ackerson, Brian Dermody, Tom Day, John Stansfield. Without them being willing to take, not only time out of their days but their own season, this wouldn’t be possible. A special thank you to our branch Secretary/Treasurer Kim Cilano O'Connor for her help in organizing, all her efforts on the social dinner and actually taking her hunter safety course. (We are gonna keep pushing to get you in a hunting blind Kim, lol). I am asking all the mentors and participants to share their venison recipes for the dishes they brought. We will be putting them together and adding to it each year as the program continues. That way each class will be contributing to the next classes when we hand out our annual Field to Fork cookbook. I’m already looking forward to 2019!

  10. First I assume we are talking about black bears and in NY? I don't even think there is a question here. Since capacity isn't a huge difference in NY between what a 45 holds and what you are allowed to carry in a a 9mm I am carrying the 45. I want to bring a hammer and not a fly swatter.
  11. Not a 2018 but have owned 3 of them in my life. Bullet proof from my experience. all 3 were 225,000---250,000 mile trucks. Gas mileage was never great with the 6 cyl versions I owned. Didn't have a mechanical issue with any of them other than wear parts.
  12. I thought the problem was something like it deletes out all the comments ever made by that person. Maybe it even does the quotes. I imagine some of the threads would make little sense if chunks were missing.

  14. Good Morning, We will again have the Habitat Seed Program that makes seed available to our members at an affordable cost and planted as a benefit to wildlife. It’s a great deal for plots and can be planted or broadcast. This is only for members in the following counties, Monroe, Livingston,Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming. Other counties should reach out to a more local branch. The contacts for other branches can be found at https://www.qdma.com/new-york/ Glyphosate Resistant Soybeans are available for this program. The seed will be one-year old seed that will germinate fine for food plots. The retail cost of this seed is between $80-$100 a bag. It should plant about a half-acre per bag or could be stretched with the addition of other species. The cost of each bag of soybeans is $9 per bag and there is no limit on the amount you can order this year. The Branch must submit the amount our members want by January 23rd to be combined with the other branches in NY. We are limited to ½ and full tractor trailer loads. We are placing our order earlier this year and pushing for delivery in March or early April, however, we are at the mercy of the trucking and seed firm. Once we secure delivery we will set a date in a central area where you can come and pick up your seed. This seed can NOT be sold, used for business purposes or harvested; it must be left for wildlife. A form will to be signed by each purchaser stating this intent. You MUST be a QDMA member to purchase the seed. You will need your membership card/number or attended our 2018 Banquet as proof. PROCESS TO ORDER: Send an email to Corbin Palmer at [email protected] and request the number of bags you would like to purchase. Include your full name, mailing address, email address, contact phone number and your membership status. Corbin will respond with an email confirming your order, so you know it was received. When you receive Corbin’s confirming email, send your payment check to Kim O’Connor, 20 Sandstone Drive, Spencerport, NY 14559. All seed payments must be received by Kim no later than February 28th, 2019. If Kim hasn’t received your payment by the 28th, we will work through our waiting list to sell the remaining seed so it doesn’t go to waste. Thank you for your support.   17. They hand them out up there all the time and they stick. Not sure how it effects the driver license though.
  18. I know there are some branches that are saying "we'll just take a pallet" but others like ours had so many that wanted more than the 2 bags per that we figured. That is why this year I am pre-ordering for our branch. Personally I don't see the want to get a half load of or load of the sorghum or wheat. Since the corn is NOT roundup ready and our local NWTF branch distributes RR corn I don't want to develop a conflict there. So we are sticking with soybean and it will be pre-order so we can really try to get the member the quantities they want.

  20. Not an issue at all. I was just curious becasue I sure know the Regional Director is not going to want all those order forms hitting his mail....LOL. It's a great deal. The Round up ready soybean is usually about $80-100 a bag depending. We took a full load in NY last year and I could have turned more over in our counties. if anyone wants in I would go to QDMA website https://www.qdma.com/new-york/ Look for a branch nearest you and contact the person listed for the branch. anyone in Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe or Livingston Counties can go though me. I will have a post up tomorrow under our sub forum here with all the information.
